As a core member of our world-class academic healthcare system, the Bariatric RegisteredDietitian II guides patients through the entire weight management and bariatric surgery process, from initial evaluation and surgical preparation to long-term post-operative care and weight maintenance. This position focuses on supporting medical weight management and bariatric surgery patients, ensuring positive outcomes and sustainable, evidence-based lifestyle changes. The dietitian collaborates with a multidisciplinary team and follows all regulatory, accrediting, and licensing requirements and quality improvement initiatives.
Essential Job Functions
Provide evidence-based medical nutrition therapy (MNT), education, and counseling for patients before and after bariatric surgery in both individual and group settings.
Conduct comprehensive pre-operative nutrition assessments, including:
Escalate concerns to bariatric team when: Red flags are identified (non-adherence, medical instability, disordered eating).
Weight history, diet history, and dietary and lifestyle patterns
Disordered eating screening
Readiness for surgery and lifestyle change as well as compliance potential
Micronutrient risk and baseline supplementation
Monitor patient progress through regular supervised weight loss visits (individual and group sessions)
Deliver structured pre-op and post-op education in both individual and group settings on:
Diet phases and progression
Protein, hydration, and vitamin/mineral supplementation
Long-term behavioral and lifestyle modification
Develop and implement individualized nutrition care plans that are culturally sensitive and compassionate to our diverse patient population
Provide longitudinal post-op follow-up at defined intervals
Track attendance/compliance for insurance prior-authorization documentation
Deliver ongoing, long-term patient follow-up to monitor nutritional status, manage clinical issues (e.g. nausea, intolerances, dumping syndrome), guide expectations, and support dietary changes.
Identify and manage: malnutrition, nutrient deficiencies, dumping syndrome, intolerance, dehydration, and poor intake.
Order, evaluate, interpret and monitor nutrition labs and guide vitamin/mineral supplementation to prevent deficiencies
Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (bariatric surgeons, program staff, behavioral health, and allied health professionals) to ensure comprehensive patient care
Use computer programs to access information and communicate with other members of the interdisciplinary team
Document clinical care according to organizational guidelines
Plan and lead monthly group support sessions for pre- and post- operative patients; foster a supportive community
Develop, review, update and implement educational materials for bariatric patients and staff
Participate in bariatric program educational and promotional activities
Assist with quality improvement plans and maintain accreditation standards, specifically for the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation & Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP)
Engage in opportunities for bariatric nutrition research including healthcare disparities and access to care initiatives, quality initiatives, patient safety efforts, and healthcare delivery science.
May attend national conferences or continuing education events, as appropriate
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
BS/BA in Nutrition, Dietetics or other relevant major with completion of didactic program in dietetics.

Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Admin Nurse III, the Dietitian Nutritionist will provide services related to medical nutrition therapy in the treatment and prevention of disease.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assesses nutritional, health and dietary needs of patients. Develops meal plans for patients and evaluates the effects of meal plans, then revises the plans as needed. The applicant will be a member of a RDN team conducting a federally funded malnutrition grant titled “Malnutrition Health Equity Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults.” This position entails performing malnutrition screenings and comprehensive assessments to include the Nutrition-Focused Physical Exam ( NFPE ) with older adults participating in Utah County community senior centers. This position requires a minimum of a Bachelors in dietetics, nutrition, or nutrition-related field. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified. Successful completion of an approved Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics program and registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration or registration eligible. This job offers flexible hours, local travel to community senior centers with mileage reimbursement and 40% remote work available. * Successful completion of completed program, dietetic internship, or other experience approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education
* MS degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or other relevant major, or BS/BA in Nutrition, Dietetics or other relevant major with completion of didactic program in dietetics if necessary AND Board specialty certification (e. g. Certified Specialist in Pediatrics, Certified Nutrition Support Clinician, Certified Specialist in Pediatric Critical Care) relevant to position.
* 3 or more years of clinical experience preferred, but we will consider dietitians with less experience
* At least 1 year experience in an ambulatory setting
* Member of the American Dietetic Association or relevant practice group(s) preferred

**Responsibilities:**
To provide timely, comprehensive, evidence-based nutritional care and education to patients and families. To prepare patients and families as they transition to a new enteral nutrition requirement mainly through patient education on home enteral nutrition modalities. Coordinates with inpatient and outpatient teams and pharmacy technicians to ensure patient success.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge in area of expertise related to high-risk populations. Participate in the training of medical staff, dietetic interns and peers. Ensure best practices by regularly reviewing the literature and changing policies/practice, if warranted. Available for travel to hospitals, home visits and clinics for patient assessment and education.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Home Nutrition Support Education - Provides education on medical nutrition therapy and food-drug interactions to patients and caregivers. Ensure continuity of care when a patient transitions home. Provides patient/caregiver education on gravity, syringe or pump based enteral nutrition feedings as well as supply care. Ability to identify different enteral access devices and their appropriateness in different clinical settings. Instruction on general tube site care. Instruction on flushes and general medication administration tips. Education to providers on script writing and insurance nuances. Develop nutrition education materials.
+ Communication - Effectively communicates nutrition plans and rationale to team members. Use hospital wide and pharmacy specific electronic medical records. Liaison between pharmacy team and inpatient team. Assists providers with order writing. Demonstrates ability to utilize various HIPAA secure patient communication modalities. Possesses the technological knowledge to utilize software programs pertinent to role. Maintains communication with industry representatives to remain aware of supply chain issues, technology, and formula changes.
+ Interdisciplinary Teamwork - Educating inpatient and outpatient provider teams, care coordinators, dietitians and other healthcare professionals on home enteral nutrition and insurance nuances. In-services/lecture requests. Mentors clinical nutrition specialists and clinical dietitians. Serves as clinical preceptor to dietetic interns and provides didactic training. Participates in nutrition support rounds, offers insights and teaching points when appropriate.
+ Insurance - Understanding of insurance coverage criteria for home EN and documentation required to support claims. Uploading documentation to pharmacy EMR as needed. Awareness of insurance and industry changes.
+ Clinical Nutrition Assessment - Assesses and presents nutrition status of patients to the medical team. Provides ongoing nutritional assessment, monitoring, evaluation, and education to patients and families. Develops and implements individualized nutrition care plans for patients across the lifecycle, from infants to the elderly, as assigned. Integrates evidence-based research in the education, practice and management of patients. Verifies clinical appropriateness of proposed home nutrition support plans. Maintains level of expertise in formula choice & modality to optimize success with home EN. Expert in lab monitoring for long term EN; optimizing compliance with home EN and troubleshooting.
+ Quality Assurance/Research - Leadership role in a QA activity, hospital committee or nutrition related research in coordination with other services. Analyze data and participate in QA activities to identify opportunities for improved practice. Attend regular department staff meetings as scheduled. When opportunities arise, participates in nutrition and metabolic research conducted independently or in coordination with other services/providers; prepares and submits materials for publication. Authors a review article or book chapter. Speaks at local, regional or national conference.
+ Travel - Home visits for nutrition assessments and education. Traveling to different hospitals, doctor's offices, different team meeting spaces
+ Other duties as assigned
**MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**
+ Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition, Foods and Nutrition Service or equivalent, completion of one-year dietetic internship experience or equivalent.
+ Master's Degree in related field (preferred)
+ 4 years of clinical nutrition experience in a health care setting.
+ A reliable personal vehicle and a NYS driver's license.
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
+ Demonstrate proficient and competent performance of required tasks of Clinical Nutrition Specialist I.
**LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS**
+ Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
+ Advanced certification, CNSC, CDCES, CSP or other specialist certification in specific area of practice required within 18 months of hire.
