    Upper Arlington School District Substitute Health Aide Reports to: School nurse, building principal, or other designee Description: Works with the school nurse to accomplish maintenance/continuation of the safety, health, and wellness goals of the school community NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance Qualifications: * Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing (LPN) Required * ODE Pupil Services Permit Required * BSN degree or Registered Nursing School (RN) Preferred * Three to five years related experience * CPR certification * Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Ability to work effectively with others * Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing * Effective, active listening skills * Organizational and problem solving skills * Skills that foster and facilitate learning and classroom management * Ability to work in a team environment * First aid/CPR training Essential Functions: * Determine and perform appropriate response to complaints (headaches, stomachaches, etc.) * Triage and administer first aid to staff and students * Perform prescribed medical treatment procedures * Administer medications, both routine and PRN * Administer emergency medication for anaphylaxis, diabetes, asthma, seizures, etc. * Respond to emergent medical needs according to directives in individual care plan * Respond to emergencies requiring CPR or AED * Record all clinic activity in health records according to FERPA regulations * Communicate pertinent information to parents * Communicate health/medical information on a need to know basis for teachers/staff * Record all communicable diseases and notify class of exposure * Take inventory of supplies and restock * Contribute to maintaining and updating Health Concerns List * Keep health records up to date * Track and make calls/emails to ensure all Emergency Medical Authorization and Information forms are received in a timely manner for each student * Track and make calls/emails to ensure immunization records and physical exam forms are received for each child entering kindergarten and each student new to the District * Review immunization records for compliance to state recommended schedule * Perform required screenings (vision/hearing/scoliosis/BMI) on all students in specified grade levels * Write referrals for all who do not pass minimum requirements and follow-up on action taken * Participate in meetings with parents to create a care plan for children with special needs * Work with school nurse on special activities in classrooms * Participate in safety/health/wellness school functions * Participate in special training * Contribute to the creation and implementation of a school disaster plan Other Duties and Responsibilities: * Serve as a role model for students * Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner * Perform other duties as assigned Equipment Operated: * Computer * Audiometer * Lighted eye chart * Telephone * Typewriter * Copy machine * Thermometer Additional Working Conditions: * Occasional interaction among unruly children * Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue * Occasional requirement for a "2 person" lift and carry children up to approximately 80 pounds * Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals * Occasional requirement to push and pull up to a maximum of 300 pounds (on wheels) * Frequent requirement to work past scheduled hours on any given day due to emergencies and illnesses * Occasional requirement to lift and carry (i.e., children) up to approximately 50 pounds * Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds, e.g., paper boxes, deliveries of supplies and equipment * Frequently move and position self as necessary to access and operate equipment * Frequently move around workspace and travel throughout school building and/or school district Employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance, use in the work place throughout his/her employment with the District. Essential Duties • Report all changes in the resident's condition to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse as soon as practical. • Record all entries on flow sheets, notes, charts, etc., in an informative, descriptive manner. • Report all accidents and incidents you observe on the shift that they occur. • Agree not to disclose resident's protected health information and promptly report suspected or known violations of such disclosure to the Administrator. • Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempt to access facility's information system. • Perform only those nursing care procedures that you have been trained to do. • Ensure that the resident's room is ready for receiving the resident (i.e., bed made, name tags up, admission kit available, etc.). • Greet residents and escort them to their room. • Introduce resident to his/her roommate, if any, and other residents and personnel as appropriate. • Make resident comfortable. • Inventory and mark the resident's personal possessions as instructed. • Store resident's clothing. • Assist residents with packing their personal possessions when they are being transferred to a new room, or when being discharged. • Transport residents to new rooms or to the receiving area. • Assist with loading/unloading residents' to/from vehicles as necessary. • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift. • Meet with your shift's nursing personnel, on a regularly scheduled basis, to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services. • Report all complaints and grievances made by the resident. • Participate in and receive the nursing report as instructed. • Follow established policies concerning exposure to blood/body fluids. • Make beds as instructed. • Put extra covers on beds as requested. • Measure and record temperatures, pulses, and respirations (TPRs) of residents, as instructed.
