Thompson Engineering is looking for a qualified Project Geotechnical Engineer. Project-Level Geotechnical Engineer The Project-Level Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for performing geotechnical engineering analyses and managing projects of varying scope and scale under the guidance of a Senior or Principal Engineer. This role supports transportation, heavy industrial, and infrastructure projects.
Key duties include proposal preparation, fieldwork, engineering calculations, coordination of field and laboratory tasks, client interaction, and general civil engineering support.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Field Duties
* Perform and/or lead field drilling services and associated engineering analysis and calculations
* Prepare geotechnical recommendations, designs, plans, and specifications
* Conduct observation and inspection services
* Write, prepare, and review related technical reports
* Perform field work including:
* Logging borings
* Supporting cone penetration testing (CPT) operations
* Performing geotechnical field testing
* Working alongside drill rigs and drilling crews, and/or on active construction sites related to Construction Materials Testing (CMT) services
Project Management & Coordination
* Review construction drawings for compliance with plans and specifications
* Prepare proposals and cost estimates
* Track and evaluate project budgets and progress; recommend changes as needed
* Assign, review, and evaluate laboratory or field data for inclusion in reports
Design & Engineering
* Research and resolve design and construction problems
* Assist with the initial design and investigative approach for major project phases
* Apply sound engineering principles and communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
* Plan, schedule, and coordinate engineering tasks involving both conventional and complex design requirements
Leadership & Oversight
* Provide technical review and direction for complex investigations
* Supervise analysis and ensure findings and recommendations are clearly formulated in client reports
* Review and approve engineering documents and technical deliverables

* Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Master's degree preferred) from an ABET/EAC-accredited program

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred candidates should have knowledge related to coastal restoration, beach nourishment, shoreline protection, dredging, coastal structures, coastal hazard analyses, hydrodynamic modeling and coastal process analyses. Roles and responsibilities of this position include:
* Project management and/or senior technical oversight of planning, engineering, design, and construction-phase services for coastal and/or navigation multi-disciplinary projects
* Leading coastal and/or navigation project delivery decisions regarding technical approaches, cost estimating, project scheduling, project resourcing, safety, and subcontractor coordination and management.
* Team management, mentoring, and professional development of coastal engineering technical staff.
* Marketing of FNI's coastal and navigation services to include meeting with current/prospective clients and leading proposals and statement of qualification development.
* Contribution to strategic initiatives to expand FNI's service offering geographically and technically to a wide variety of client types including federal and state agencies, local government clients, ports, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other types of private sector clients.
Qualifications
Required or Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
* Professional Engineer license required in one or more states located along the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic coast.
* Master's or higher degree in Coastal, Ocean, or related Engineering preferred.
* Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering, design.
* Working knowledge of numerical modeling of coastal storm risk management projects and navigation and dredging projects preferred.
* Project Management Professional certification preferred.
* Experience in delivering projects for and working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers required. Experience working with additional Federal agencies preferred.
* Project management skills with experience in managing project delivery teams and coordinating with clients and regulatory agencies required.
* Intimate understanding of coastal engineering and science principles required; and/or, dredge engineering and science principles.
* Knowledge of wind-wave-water levels, coastal sediment processes, coastal morphology, storm-induced erosion analyses required, and dredging and dredged material conveyance and management preferred.
* Understanding of mare vessel maneuvering and environmental forces characteristics preferred.
* Experience with contributing to and/or leading strategic initiatives to develop and expand business opportunities with new clients and new geographic locations.
* Experience at recruiting, managing, directing and mentoring a team of professional coastal design staff.
* Ability to oversee the preparation of construction plans and other graphics using CAD and ArcGIS.

What you need to have:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
Master of Engineering preferred, but not required
Valid Professional Engineering Licensure (P.E.)
10+ years of engineering experience in bridge design
TxDOT experience is strongly preferred
Skilled in the use of OpenBridge Designer
Technical expertise for the layout & design of bridges and related highway structures
Familiarity with rehabilitation of existing bridges and highway structures
Knowledge of AASHTO and other pertinent bridge design specifications
Familiarity of TxDOT bridge standards and design manuals is strongly preferred
Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines

Thompson Engineering is looking for a qualified Project Geotechnical Engineer.
Project-Level Geotechnical Engineer
The Project-Level Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for performing geotechnical engineering analyses and managing projects of varying scope and scale under the guidance of a Senior or Principal Engineer. This role supports transportation, heavy industrial, and infrastructure projects.
Key duties include proposal preparation, fieldwork, engineering calculations, coordination of field and laboratory tasks, client interaction, and general civil engineering support.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Field Duties
Perform and/or lead field drilling services and associated engineering analysis and calculations
Prepare geotechnical recommendations, designs, plans, and specifications
Conduct observation and inspection services
Write, prepare, and review related technical reports
Perform field work including:
Logging borings
Supporting cone penetration testing (CPT) operations
Performing geotechnical field testing
Working alongside drill rigs and drilling crews, and/or on active construction sites related to Construction Materials Testing (CMT) services
Project Management & Coordination
Review construction drawings for compliance with plans and specifications
Prepare proposals and cost estimates
Track and evaluate project budgets and progress; recommend changes as needed
Assign, review, and evaluate laboratory or field data for inclusion in reports
Design & Engineering
Research and resolve design and construction problems
Assist with the initial design and investigative approach for major project phases
Apply sound engineering principles and communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Plan, schedule, and coordinate engineering tasks involving both conventional and complex design requirements
Leadership & Oversight
Provide technical review and direction for complex investigations
Supervise analysis and ensure findings and recommendations are clearly formulated in client reports

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Master's degree preferred) from an ABET/EAC-accredited program
0-5 years of experience in Geotechnical Engineering
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Willingness and ability to travel
