The Farmington Canal’s opening in 1828 brought new business to the village, which sat where the canal intersected the Talcott Mountain Turnpike linking Hartford to Albany, New York.
Hopes of industrial and commercial growth spurred Avon to incorporate in 1830.
It was a radical business model in 1886, but McConnell believed in the power of community, and was passionate about giving women economic freedom.
The Nottingham Power Plant, a self constructed wood waterwheel, was built on the Eagle River in 1928 andgenerated electricity for use-by the family of Emmett and Myrtle Nottingham and the nearby Avon Depot.
