The veterinary assistant works with veterinarians and technicians to provide patient care and administrative support in the Small Animal Hospital especially for the Internal Medicine service. This position works under immediate supervision from a manager as well as supportive oversight from veterinarians and technicians. Provides basic patient care and administrative support as directed.
This individual will work closely with clients, patients, and hospital staff and must be able to develop friendly, professional relationships and maintain a positive attitude throughout all interactions. The assistant will be responsible for the cleanliness and organization of the service treatment areas as well as providing basic patient care and husbandry under the direction of technicians and doctors.
An individual in this position must possess excellent communication skills and be proactive in determining the needs of the hospital. A successful applicant should enjoy learning new things and can quickly adapt to a changing environment. They need to possess a good base knowledge of veterinary medicine and express a positive attitude in their daily work. The individual must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate critical thinking and professionalism.
Typical schedule will be Monday through Friday and may require working earlier then 7:30 a.m. or later than 5:00 p.m. Schedule may change due to covering other shifts and it may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital depending on patient care needs.
Individual is considered essential personnel which may include reporting to work during Main Campus closures.
This is a full-time, benefited position and is considered essential personnel. A post-offer education verification, background check, and health assessment are required.

Position Summary
The primary purpose of the Field Services/Theriogenology Veterinary Assistant is to assist the theriogenology and Field Services department with daily in-house and on-site appointments, maintain and stock the necessary equipment to conduct the theriogenology service, and assist with maintaining records and charges for the theriogenology and field service department as appropriate. Handling/restraint of large animals. (Primarily horses/cows, but may include sheep, pigs, goats, and camelids). The assistant is needed to safely handle all temperaments of horses. * Check liquid nitrogen tank frequently and reorder when necessary
* Check semen storage tank no less than biweekly to maintain sufficient level of liquid nitrogen
* Maintain semen inventory list to monitor what is going in and coming out of semen tanks.
* Keep track of semen shippers, 2 dry shippers, 7 equitainers
* Maintain minimum of 5 Equine Express and 5 Canine Express Disposable shippers on hand at all times keep inventory of materials and supplies in semen lab
* Properly fill, use, and clean artificial vagina
* Properly use and maintain breeding phantom
* Keep collection supplies stocked
* Ship semen (frozen or chilled) via Fed-Ex or airline (Delta) counter to counter service
* Assist in process of freezing semen and properly handle frozen semen samples
* Set up transportation for tease mares to and from the hospital when needed
* Professionally communicate with owners the process of theriogenology appointments
* Any species: Prepare patient and set up supplies for procedures - canine, equine, bovine, small ruminant- artificial insemination(AI), uterine culture/cytology, uterine lavage/infusion, dystocia, and embryo transfer
* Keep track of mare book

* Use cattle chute
* Maintain bull breeding soundness exam(BSE) supplies and equipment in stock and in working order

Prepare the rehab room for the patients in the morning. Clean the rehab equipment and room after each appointment. Clean underwater treadmill, monitor water chemicals, and change water in reservoir. Clean the rehab room at the end of each day (vacuum, mop, UWTM cleaning, organize treats, slings, equipment, etc). Wash rehab laundry throughout the day.

Our work consists of assisting the veterinarians in diagnostic and preventative procedures or the treatment of animals. Job responsibilities will also include working with colony management and assisting investigators in data collection or reporting.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Under general supervision, assists the veterinarians and researchers in surgery and radiology, animal care, treatments, and diagnostic and preventative procedures.
* Maintains medical records and inventory.
* Provides non-surgical technical assistance to researchers as directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* A high school diploma or equivalent.
* Three years of experience as a veterinary technician, OR a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of experience as an animal care technician, OR graduation from a two-year veterinary technician program and one year of veterinary technician experience. Equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Basic veterinary technical skills. Strongly prefer a licensed veterinary technician with work experience in a veterinary hospital or research facility. Position is most suitable for a veterinary technician who can learn and implement new skills and competently work in a high-paced environment.

Example of Veterinary Technician Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:
* Assist with patient evaluations or rechecks by assisting in patient restraint, obtaining and submitting samples, scheduling with other services for diagnostic or consultation purposes, and providing treatment or medications
* Perform general nursing care such as venipuncture, catheter placement, patient restraint, treatments, medication administration, and sample collection
* Document in electronic medical records
* Perform skin scrapes and cytology
* Assist with deep ear flushes, otoscopic exams, biopsies, intradermal skin testing, laser procedures
* Prepare allergens for intradermal skin testing and make allergy vaccines
* Allergy vaccine administration demonstration and education with clients
* Safely handle and assist with exams on both small and large animal patients
* Perform basic anesthesia and sedation procedures including patient monitoring and recovery
The service receives Monday - Friday. May require working earlier than 8:00am or later than 5:00pm
This is a full-time, benefited position and is considered essential personnel. A post-offer education verification, background check, and health assessment are required.
Expected Salary:
Non-credentialed technician $18-22, Credentialed technician $20-25
Preferred Qualifications
* Graduate from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for veterinary technology OR
* Credentialed veterinary technician
