University of Maine at Presque Isle company history timeline

1903

It has undergone four name changes since then. It was founded in 1903 as Aroostook State Normal School, offering a two-year teacher preparation program.

1913

The potato became so important that in 1913 Thomas Phair and other leading Presque Isle businessmen convinced the state legislature to fund the purchase and operation of the Aroostook Farm which was a demonstration farm that experimented in the modern methods of potato production.

1940

In addition, Presque Isle became Aroostook County’s first city in 1940.

1961

The twenty-year growing trend ended, however, in 1961 when the government closed the Presque Isle Air Force Base.

2007

The Institute was created following talks University of Maine at Presque Isle officials held in 2007 with many different local businesses.

2009

UMPI's wind turbine began generating clean energy in late spring 2009 after the university reached an agreement with general contractor Lumus Construction Inc. on a $2 million project to install a 600-kilowatt wind turbine on the campus.

2015

In January 2015, officials from the Foundation of the University of Maine at Presque Isle announced their completion of efforts to completely divest from all fossil fuels on campus.

2020

In October 2020, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has announced their first master's degree, a Masters of Art in Organizational Leadership.
