Provides and coordinates independent care to patients within a clinical specialty as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Principal Responsibilities And Tasks The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. Accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance. Serves as an effective primary coordinating nurse; collaborates with interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs. Serves as clinical resource for others. Service/Quality: Assists in team development and evaluation of the Relationship-Based Care model; suggests methods for improvement. Participates in collection of data related to Relationship-Based Care outcomes (e.g. hand offs, medication safety, etc). Participates in implementation efforts addressing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI). Participates and contributes to Performance Improvement, or Evidence Based Practice, or research at the unit level. Complies with standards and participates with unit level activities for regulatory compliance. Unit Operations: Supports charge nurse decisions; performs charge role for assigned shifts as needed. Follows and supports the AACN guidelines for Healthy Work Environment (communication, collaboration, effective decision making, recognition, leadership, staffing); participates as team member focusing on elements within the Healthy Work Environment. Professional Development: Serves as preceptor, coach, mentor to new nurses and students. Contributes to ancillary personnel skills and development, attends educational offerings and in-services independently. Patient Safety Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives. Acts to correct observed risks to patient safety. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge. Qualifications Education & Experience Unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or a Nurse Compact License (NSL) BSN preferred. Demonstrates skills and competencies with: Maintains NRP, fetal monitoring and rhythm recognition certification/competency All Labor and Delivery nurses will be required to orient and maintain competencies as a mother/baby RN. Nurses involved in the recovery of C-section patients must complete Advanced Life Support skills for the OB nurse course. Sets priorities and organizes work effectively. Provides health teaching that addresses such topics as risk-reducing behaviors, activities of daily living, infection prevention behaviors and patient rights and responsibilities. Assures the Environment of Care is maintained according to regulatory guidelines. Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of the planned strategies in relation to patient responses and the attainment of the expected outcomes. Assures compliance with all National Hospital Quality Measures Ensures compliance with all National Patient Safety Goals and infection control standards. Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice. Demonstrates skills and competencies for the adolescent, adult and elderly patient. Maintains and is accountable for required 20 CEUs for the year. Submits clinical ladder yearly completion list, if applicable. Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues; assists others with implementation of care. Partners with others to effect change and generate positive outcomes through knowledge of the patient, use of SBAR communication and hand-off communication per policy. Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice by delivering care that protects patient outcomes, dignity, rights and confidentiality. Integrates evidence-based findings into practice; participates in unit/hospital quality improvement efforts i.e. shared governance; and unit-specific improvement efforts. Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of care: uses supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner. Assumes leadership role of the team. Participates in training of nursing students/precepts, if requested. Delegates tasks and duties in compliance with policy and in a manner which results in efficient and effective patient care. Work Orientation & Experience: Prior experience in Labor & Delivery is required. Orientation based on experience level and determined by unit. Regardless of experience, all new RN team members will be required to complete the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Hospital Breastfeeding Policy Training Program in addition to six hours of Qualifications Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelors preferred. Currently licensed as an RN in the State of Maryland. Certification in BCLS and NRP required. ACLS for the OB Nurse preferred. If not NRP certified, it must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
