Physics Laboratory Research Operations and Service 3 The Micro-Pattern Gas detector (MPGD) group of Professors Nilanga Liyanage and Huong Nguyen in the Physics department at the University of Virginia, is seeking to hire a Laboratory Research Operations and Service 3 position.

Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to develop and construct advanced particle detectors to be used in nuclear and particle physics experiments conducted at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). These experiments are aimed at understanding the structure of sub-nucleonic particles.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of this laboratory specialist include assisting in the design and fabrication of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, testing and characterization of these detectors, and installation of these detectors in Jefferson Lab, the laboratory specialist will also be required to participate in the running of experiments at Jefferson lab and the analysis of data from the experiments
Minimum Qualifications
* Education: Bachelor's degree required, may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.
* Experience: 1+ year of relevant lab experience required.
* Licensure/Certifications: None
Preferred Qualifications
* Education: Bachelor's degree in Physics

An interventional technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of a procedure. An interventional technologist must demonstrate an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. They must possess, utilize, and maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety.

A laboratory technician position is available in the Department of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University. The successful candidate will be working in a very active, enthusiastic and highly dynamic pre-clinical translational research laboratory. We are seeking a highly motivated individual.
Job duties will include the following:
* Making of general laboratory reagents (e.g. buffer preparation)
* Laboratory stock maintenance and ordering
* General laboratory maintenance (e.g. glass washing and laboratory tidying as needed)
* Maintain breeding colonies of genetically engineered mice including maintaining accurate and up to date records
* Collect mouse breeding colony tissue samples and processing for genotyping that requires animal handling skills
The applicant should be enthusiastic in expanding their role to include the following:
* Learning and then successfully performing preparation of small animals for anesthesia and surgery, performing the small animal surgeries themselves, drug treatment, monitoring the animal's recovery after surgery, and required institutional record keeping
* Learning and then successfully performing daily post-operative animal care with 100% compliance with VCU IACUC protocols and record-keeping
* Learning and then successfully performing small animal behavioral testing (e.g. motor function, cognition, depression and pain)
* Learning and then successfully performing small animal transcardial perfusions, tissue preparation, cryostat sectioning, fluorescent immunohistochemistry, and stereological cell counts
* Learning and then successfully performing fresh tissue dissection, and techniques including Western blotting QPCR, and flow cytometry
* Learning and then successfully performing in vitro culturing of either cell lines or primary cell cultures
* Learning and then successfully performing molecular biology techniques (e.g. Western blotting, QPCR and ELISA's).
Hours are expected to be between Monday to Friday (8.30am -5.00pm), although some weekend work will likely be required, as needed (e.g. breeding colony monitoring and potential post-operative animal care).

The Le lab investigates how genetic and microenvironmental factors interplay to regulate tumorigenesis. Our research focuses on identification of the cell of origin and elucidating the role of tumor microenvironment in cancer development. We dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis from a developmental perspective using Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a common tumor predisposition human genetic disorder, as a model. While working on neurofibromatosis, our research group serendipitously uncovered the identity of follicular epithelial cells that directly give rise to hair and mechanisms that cause hair to turn gray - findings that led to our second focus to identify possible treatments for balding and hair graying associated with aging. The laboratory offers a rich experimental environment that encompasses both basic and translational research

The Department of Surgery seeks applicants for a Lab and Research Technician 1 or 2 to work in the lab of Dr. Samantha Ruff. Level will be determined by qualifications. Lab and Research Technician employees focus on performing routine research tasks and developing skills. They assume routine to moderately complex technical support for research projects. Work is routine and can be performed with some degree of independence when following established protocols and procedures. Lab and Research Technician employees perform tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Responsibilities
* Perform similar duties to Lab and Research Aide, such as collecting specimens, setting up and performing experiments of a repetitive nature; and preparing culture media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions as instructed, and cell culturing.
* Tasks will include abdominal suturing during animal surgeries (this can be taught), monitoring mice after survival surgery, administering medications through intraperitoneal injection (this can be taught), taking care of the breeder colonies, genotyping of genetic editing of mice and following protocol as laid out by the institution, and refilling water/food.
* Prepare support materials, compare and assist with analyses of data and write reports.
* Operate, adjust, and maintain specific scientific apparatuses and instruments. Notify lab manager when supplies are running low.
* Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
* Keep informed of new lab techniques.
* Provide routine, technical, and administrative support to research projects.
