The You Zhou Lab within the Department of Materials Science & Engineering seeks to recruit multiple researchers at the rank of Assistant Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Associate. The project is to develop radio frequency quantum electronics based on two-dimensional materials.. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers from the DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory and requires U.S. citizenship. It would also position the researcher with access to a broad base of collaborators and opportunities from which to launch and build his or her own research enterprise. The expected start date is Summer 2025, though there is some flexibility.
Some specific duties include:
Working with multidisciplinary teams of researchers (e.g., engineers, physicists), to design and carry out research, primarily at the intersection of materials and electronics; Producing high-impact research in support of publications or proposals; Reviewing and synthesizing existing literature to inform new proposal directions or whitepapers for federal agencies; Working with and training faculty research assistants, graduate students, and undergraduate assistants on various problems in electronic and optical materials; Directing and conducting data collection at Army Research Labs facilities; Preparing presentations, reports, funding proposals, and scholarly publications related to research and communicating those deliverables to internal or external sponsors.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering field by the start date.

Physical Demands:
This position requires the individual to wear and work in cleanroom personal protective equipment. This position requires fine motor skills for handling small, fragile components and the ability to perform tasks requiring visual acuity, such as aligning optical systems and inspecting materials under microscopes. Job Description:
The Schaefer Center is an applied research and consulting organization within the College of Public Affairs that conducts externally funded research and training for government and nonprofit clients located primarily in Maryland. This split staff/teaching position will be supervised in the Schaefer Center for Public Policy with a dual report to the Executive Director of the School of Public and International Affairs. The primary roles of this position are to conduct quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques to complete research projects on the behalf of the Center's clients and to teach graduate/doctoral courses in applied research methods for our DPA, MPA, and PPIA programs.
The incumbent is responsible for using quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques to complete research projects on behalf of Center clients. In this role, the incumbent is responsible for implementing research designs, designing data collection instruments, collecting original data and secondary data, analyzing data, and report writing. For assigned projects, the incumbent coordinates the work of faculty researchers, other staff, and graduate assistants to execute research plans and complete projects on time. The incumbent is also responsible for leading the development of final reports and drafting progress reports and other deliverables for the director's review. The incumbent plays a major role in maintaining client relations, serving as the primary point of contact for clients for assigned projects. The incumbent also assists in identifying new research opportunities, developing new client relationships, and grant proposals.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Serves as a primary or lead researcher on assigned, grant funded evaluation or policy research projects. Designs and executes data collection and analysis plans. Coordinates the work of research team members including faculty researchers, Schaefer Center staff, and graduate fellows.
- Determines sources of information, and their reliability, and the method of study. Edits raw data for accuracy, completeness and consistency, and detects and traces data discrepancies.
- Prepares Intuitional Review Board applications for UBalt IRB as well as external IRBs. Prepares responses to IRB questions and maintains and provides required documentation.
- Leads the collection of original data through surveys, focus groups, and in-person interviews. Coordinates with the Survey Research Manager.
- Designs and implements complex web-based surveys in support of research and training initiatives.
- Collects original qualitative data through the design, collection, and analysis of qualitative data collection methods including focus groups and in-person interviewing.
- Prepares both narrative and statistical reports of a complicated nature to inform the decision making of public sector executives and managers.
- For assigned projects, drafts progress reports, work plans, and final reports. Documents and resolves discrepancies in deliverables. Monitors timelines and status of deliverables; schedules project tasks and makes recommendations to the director about project priorities and the need for modifications to the scope of work or time for sponsored research projects.
- Teaches occasional training sessions on data-based decision making, program evaluation, performance measurement, and related topics for the Maryland Certified Public Manager Program.
- Identifies potential research opportunities, participates in the development of proposed research designed, and assists in preparation of proposals. Participates in meetings with potential clients.
- Promotes the visibility of the Schaefer Center and UBalt through support of high visibility external events, maintains an active research agenda that includes presenting at academic conferences and publishing in academic journals.
Teaching Load:
- Load of 1 -1 in courses in applied research methods to Master's and Doctoral level students in the School of Public and International Affairs

One of only 15 designated Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) in the nation and the only UARC focused on supporting the intelligence community, ARLIS conducts both unclassified and classified research spanning from basic to applied system development and works to serve the US Government as an independent and objective trusted agent.
ARLIS research is driven by a cadre of research scientists and engineers, faculty research specialists and project engineers, further supported by senior University of Maryland faculty and a consortium of university partners. Research is typically conducted through teams of e.g. social scientists, computer scientists, psychologists, linguists, cognitive neuroscientists, applied mathematicians, political scientists, policy analysts, and systems engineers.
The Assistant Research Scientist will contribute to interdisciplinary human subject research projects within ARLIS, with a focus on neurophysiological measurement techniques including functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG). This role supports ARLIS's mission to advance applied research in human performance, cognition, and emotion science in support of national security and defense. Scientists in this role will design, conduct, analyze, and publish experimental studies and contribute to broader research programs in experimental psychology and neuroscience.
Must be able to obtain a U.S. security clearance. If selected, you must meet the requirements for access to classified information and will be subject to a government security clearance investigation that includes criminal and credit history checks, as well as verification of U.S. citizenship, birth, education, employment, and military history.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) laboratory and conduct research in the areas of alcohol fermentation, fermentation microbiology, molecular microbiology, and antimicrobial resistance. The responsibilities for this position are:
•Develop research protocols and conduct field trips for sample collection and
procurement.
•Perform laboratory basic, molecular microbiological analysis, and data analysis
using statistical software such as SAS.
•Prepare scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
•Prepare posters and oral presentations for scientific conferences.
•Assist in other research projects and departmental activities.
•Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
•PhD. in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Microbiology, Molecular Biology,
or a closely related field.
•Enthusiasm for conducting research in the field as well as in the lab.
•Strong oral and written communication skills.

•Prior experience in fermentation-related work and Lactobacillus spp. Handling.
•Previous working experience in a BSL 2 facility.
