Job Description:
Support high-quality research on community-based indicators and work on projects related to data integration for social policy. The Research Assistant is engaged in a full range of research and research analysis tasks, with a special focus on analyzing quantitative data using GIS and other software, such as R or Python. The project is to develop radio frequency quantum electronics based on two-dimensional materials.. Job Description SummaryOrganization's Summary Statement: The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS), based at the University of Maryland College Park, was established in 2018 under the auspices of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence (USDI) to be a strategic asset for research and development in social systems, autonomy and augmentation, and advanced computing. One of only 15 designated Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) in the nation and the only UARC focused on supporting the intelligence community, ARLIS conducts both unclassified and classified research spanning from basic to applied system development and works to serve the US Government as an independent and objective trusted agent.
ARLIS research is driven by a cadre of research scientists and engineers, faculty research specialists and project engineers, further supported by senior University of Maryland faculty and a consortium of university partners. Research is typically conducted through teams of e.g. social scientists, computer scientists, psychologists, linguists, cognitive neuroscientists, applied mathematicians, political scientists, policy analysts, and systems engineers.
The Assistant Research Scientist will contribute to interdisciplinary human subject research projects within ARLIS, with a focus on neurophysiological measurement techniques including functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG). This role supports ARLIS's mission to advance applied research in human performance, cognition, and emotion science in support of national security and defense. Scientists in this role will design, conduct, analyze, and publish experimental studies and contribute to broader research programs in experimental psychology and neuroscience.
Must be able to obtain a U.S. security clearance. If selected, you must meet the requirements for access to classified information and will be subject to a government security clearance investigation that includes criminal and credit history checks, as well as verification of U.S. citizenship, birth, education, employment, and military history.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and conduct research studies involving fNIRS and EEG with human subjects
- Implement experimental protocols rooted in emotion and cognitive psychology
- Recruit, consent, and manage research participants in compliance with IRB protocols
- Analyze complex neurophysiological and behavioral datasets using statistical methods
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and contribute to publications, reports, and briefings
- Apply open science practices and maintain thorough documentation of procedures
- Participate in internal reviews, sponsor briefings, and project planning meetings
- Assist in grant writing and funding proposal development as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Psychology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, or a related field
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience conducting fNIRS and/or EEG research with human participants
- Familiarity with experimental design, data collection, and analysis in emotion or cognitive research
- Experience with human subjects research protocols and compliance
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Expertise in EEG and/or fNIRS methodology
- Strong foundation in experimental psychology and human subjects research methods
- Familiarity with emotion research, especially in applied or experimental contexts
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team
- Statistical analysis skills, including multilevel modeling (MLM), regression, and/or machine learning
- Proficiency in scientific programming (R and/or Python preferred)

Primary Duties
* Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications.
* Independently perform day to day laboratory research activities such as: general housekeeping, daily cell culture maintenance; collection and preparation of biological specimens from cell lines for imaging experiments; diagnostic molecular (western blot), bacteriological, or biological assays; and executing biochemical or molecular imaging procedures such as: Immunofluorescence, live cell imaging, electrophoresis, blotting, PCR and DNA extractions, etc.
* Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Maintain proper operation of research equipment, ensuring proper operation records, cleaning, ordering of required components and explaining/resolving technical issues.
* Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
* Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. Presents research findings.
* Prepare materials for research studies, including sample collection kits and research documents.
* Assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral, international fellows, and/or junior technical personnel in the performance of a variety of laboratory techniques.
* Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience including two (2) years in the relevant research specialization.
Preferred Experience: Extensive experience in the use of methods related to the stable engineering of human cells, including cell lines as well as primary human immune cells, using viral and transposase-based methods preferred. Extensive experience in the molecular cloning of combinatorial expression constructs as well as high-throughput cellular and biomolecular analytical assay preferred.

Responsibilities:
•Contribute to research activities, including performing experiments, analyzing
data, possibility of teaching, and summarizing research results for publication,
under the supervision of a faculty member.
•Assist graduate students as they conduct experiments.
•Performs other related duties as assigned.
Preferences:
•PhD or M.S. or B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Neurosciences, Virology,
Cancer Biology, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Cell Biology, or equivalent degree
•Previous research experiences in cell/molecular biology, neurosciences,
medicinal chemistry, cancer biology, genetics and/or biostatistics required.
•Special techniques such as cell tissue culture, DNA/RNA isolation, animal
models, molecular cloning, and/or protein chemistry.
Physical Demands:
•May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at desk.
•May require lifting up to 25 lbs.
•Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally.
•Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience in research coordination.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative research methodologies.
Knowledge of surveys, interviews, lab procedures, experiments, or fieldwork.
Skill in written and verbal communication for reporting and collaboration.
Skill in precision data entry, analysis, and documentation.
Skill in computational and problem-solving techniques.
Skill in maintaining research records, files, and data integrity.
Ability to interpret data, identify patterns, and draw conclusions.
Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and prioritize workload.
Ability to work effectively with faculty, researchers, and fellow assistants.

Job Description SummaryA Research Assistant position is available at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, is located just outside Washington, DC. The Department of Veterinary Medicine at UMD is home to numerous excellent scientists in the field of human and veterinary microbiology and infectious diseases. The department provides an excellent research environment and advanced research facilities, including BSL-3/ABSL-3 suites, to support cutting-edge research on infectious diseases.
The Pal Lab, led by Dr. Utpal Pal, Professor, focuses on the biology of tick-borne infections, with a particular emphasis on Lyme disease and host-pathogen interactions, and strives to develop novel strategies for prevention and treatment. The primary research focus of the laboratory is the Borrelia burgdorferi pathogen, which is responsible for Lyme disease, and the Ixodes scapularis deer ticks that harbor and transmit the bacteria.
Responsibilities:
Generation of mutant bacteria by molecular genetics
• Perform Transformations of E coli cells
• Perform Transfections of mammalian cells
• RNA extraction
• cDNA synthesis/PCR
• Cloning, Maxi/mini Prep
• Perform gel electrophoresis
• Care and experiments with rodents
• Immunization of rodents and pathogen challenge studies
• Design Primers for cloning.
• Able to run and maintain specialized laboratory equipment such as real-time PCR
• Able to maintain general laboratory equipment: pipettes, pipette aids, micro centrifuges,
CO2 incubators, etc.
• Tick Work: Able to care for and handle ticks.
• Able to collect blood from animals
• Other duties as assigned.
Preferences:
• A post-baccalaureate degree in Biological sciences or related sciences from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Technical writing skills, particularly related to biological or other natural sciences.
