Coalinga College PeerTutor - MESA Temporary Employment $16.90 per hour Up to 24 hours a week Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide peer and walk-in tutoring to students. The tutor will assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with students regularly to provide support and guidance with college course material.
Advancement to an advanced level will require supplemental experience and/or education.
* Provide individual, small group, and/or in-class tutoring to students.
* Review class material, text, predict test questions, formulate ideas for papers, work on solutions to problems, and assess a student's learning curve.
* Keep the tutorial center clean.
* Enforce tutorial policies for co-workers and students.
* Assist in the enforcement of library policies and maintenance of the tutorial computer lab.
* Contact assigned contacts promptly.
* Record tutorial sessions and select clients using the SARS tutorial computer.
Qualification
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
This position will require the incumbent to know the content of the assigned subject. Knowledge and skill to create session handouts. In-depth knowledge of office management techniques, including scheduling and customer service. Requires a working knowledge of learning styles. Requires in-depth knowledge of tutorial and instructional techniques. Requires a working knowledge of computer-aided instructional techniques and software applications. Requires a working knowledge of the use of common personal computer-based office productivity software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and intranet. Requires knowledge of and skill in using proper English grammar, vocabulary, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey technical concepts to others and to facilitate a small group learning process.
ABILITIES:
Ability to be punctual for all scheduled appointments. Ability to complete and hand in all required paperwork. Ability to be responsible, friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diverse student population. Requires the ability to make presentations to classroom-sized groups. Ability to facilitate learning for students and build student confidence in learning.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office environment, engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone. Requires the ability to retrieve work materials from overhead, waist, and ground-level files. Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard to operate a microcomputer and other standardized office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED. Must maintain a 2.7 or higher GPA and have received a B or higher in the specific subject(s) to be tutored.
Must be referred by instructor(s) for currently enrolled subjects.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
A driver's license may be required. Must be willing and able to complete the EA55 course (general tutoring) and other training as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed indoors, where some safety considerations are minimal.

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district's low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Vaughn Next Century Learning Center is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Expanded Learning Intervention Tutor to join our team. This role is focused on providing targeted academic support, designing engaging learning opportunities, and ensuring that all students are equipped with the skills they need for college, career, and lifelong success.
The ideal candidate is passionate about education, skilled in delivering effective intervention strategies, and committed to supporting diverse learners. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Implementation
Provide one-on-one and/or small group academic tutoring and mentoring during before school or in after school program settings, depending on school site needs.
Build and maintain professional and supportive relationships with teachers, administrators, students, parents, and community partners.
Maintain consistent communication with school staff and CCSP program staff to support student success.
Supervise program participants to ensure a safe, welcoming, and organized learning environment.
Collaborate with teachers and program staff in the planning and delivery of lesson plans, enrichment activities, and project-based learning.
Assist with academic advising, college and career exploration activities, and support during events and presentations.
Follow all workplace safety and program compliance guidelines.
Actively participate in staff meetings, trainings, and events on- and off-site.
Perform other program-related duties as assigned.
Availability to work some evenings and/or weekends as needed for special events.
Data Management & Monitoring
Maintain accurate daily attendance records for all program participants.
Track and log tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment activity data.
Assist with the collection of student and family program information and required documentation.
Review and utilize CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) data to monitor progress toward program goals and benchmarks, working with lead staff to identify and resolve challenges.
Support the preparation and completion of reports as required by the program.
Qualifications
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Strong academic skills in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics.
Knowledge of public-school standards and Expanded Learning Programs
Effective communication skills and demonstrated leadership ability.
Ability to assist students with academic assignments, study skills, and postsecondary readiness activities.
Ability to collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, and students.
Experience in planning and implementing lesson plans and/or student activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent .
48 college semester units successfully completed or pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills test .
Successful completion of college-level English and Math (Algebra II or higher) strongly preferred.
At least one year of experience working with school-age youth in academic, enrichment, or after-school program settings .
At least one year of paid or volunteer experience in tutoring, mentoring, or youth development, preferably with middle school or high school students .
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The position incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials.Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone.Requires the ability to retrieve work materials from overhead, waist, and ground level files.Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard to operate microcomputer and other standardized office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED. Must maintain a 2.7 or higher GPA and have received a B or higher in the specific subject(s) to be tutored.
Must be referred by instructor(s) for currently enrolled subjects.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:
Driver's license may be required. Must be willing and able to complete EA55 course (general tutoring) and other training as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed indoors where some safety considerations are minimal.
