1889

1891

Scottsville’s iconic landmark, Windom Hall, was built in 1891 as a theatre and community center.

1903

Publications of the Scottsville Literary Society.1903.

1920

Later in the 1920’s, frequent slumps in the hops commodity led the landowners and growers to turn to fruit and vegetables with marked success.

1925

By 1925, Wheatland, then with a population of about 450, was listed as the second largest hops producer, employing 4,000 during harvest seasons.

1929

When Mary E. Willson passed away in 1929, Mary Willson Rettew inherited Wheatland.

Another notable landmark is the stone wall at the Mumford Rural Cemetery which was built in 1929.

1930

He built the Eagle Hotel on the north corner of Main Street and Rochester Street, which stood until 1930 as a Scottsville landmark.

1934

In 1934, after the death Mary Willson Rettew, Wheatland was put up for sale once again.

1935

In 1935 the building became the Scottsville Free Library.

1936

Wheatland’s doors officially opened to the public on May 5, 1936.

1939

1 (1939), Ebenezer Allan in the Genesee Country by Morley Beebe Turpin and a typescript about Ebenezer Allan’s title to land in Wheatland.

1953

Wheatland’ first subdivision was built in 1953 when Charles Nichols developed his property bordering the northeastern part of the city.

1972

In 1972 a group of citizens in formed the Wheatland Historical Association to help in the preservation of our Town's history.

1974

He ran a gristmill on the north side of George Street. It was purchased by the Town of Wheatland in 1974 for offices and meeting rooms and today houses the Mumford Library.

2009

In May 2009, the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland merged with its next door neighbor, the Lancaster County Historical Society, uniting the formerly separate historical places and organizations into one non-profit historical and educational institution.

2020

On October 5, 2020, LancasterHistory launched the James Buchanan Presidential Library.
