Assistant Civil Attorney (Family Justice) - County Attorney

Reporting directly to the Family Division Director, responsible for representing the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) in all Child Protective Services (CPS) legal cases in Williamson County, including courtroom representation in hearings and trials, consulting, bench and jury trial preparation, hearing and trial practice, mediation, and drafting of motions, briefs, and discovery.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
* Provides counsel to TDFPS, as well as other county offices, regarding any legal inquiries or questions related to CPS and child welfare matters
* Provides training to TDFPS caseworkers on investigations, Family Based Safety Services, conservatorships, and adoptions
* Responds to community inquiries regarding family cases and refers to community resources when appropriate
* Represents the department in cases following a final order until the children achieve permanency
* Staffs, reviews, and provides counsel regarding new cases; reviews intake documents such as petition, orders of protection, order to appoint attorneys, order to set hearings, affidavits, and protective orders
* Coordinates with investigators and legal assistants to compile evidence
* Prepares for and represents TDFPS in contested hearings by preparing motions, providing legal research to the court, drafting legal briefs, preparing the trial notebook, interviewing and subpoenaing witnesses, reviewing evidence, examining and cross-examining witnesses, providing argument to the court, and making complex and tactical decisions while in trial and hearings
* Prepares cases for statutory and review hearings; reviews files, prepares client, and prepares orders
* Coordinates discovery requests, receipt, and responses
* Communicates and collaborates frequently with outside agencies including law enforcement, victims, witnesses, judges, TDFPS, and The Office of the Attorney General, as well as interoffice departments, such as the criminal divisions of the County and District Attorney's Offices
* Serves as a liaison between TDFPS, the Court, case participants, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding Home and Community-Based Services (HCS) for children who have special needs and will need ongoing care
* Staffs current cases for progress and evaluates case needs and issues; ensures needs are appropriately connected to resources, including but not limited to trauma-informed care
* Coordinates communication and actions in emergency situations by serving as liaison between the department, the court, and other parties in order to formulate a plan of response to emergencies, such as a move of the child for the child's safety
* Assists with mental health cases/hearings as needed
* Serves as "on-call" intake attorney in a rotation
* Cross trains to proficiency in civil division responsibilities
* Collaborates with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Williamson County as well as provides training to CASA volunteers and staff
* Attends Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and provides insight and information to law enforcement, the Children's Advocacy Center (CAC), and the department
* Participates as a member of the community Fatality Review Team
* Attends all meetings and trainings, as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Doctor of Jurisprudence from an accredited law school and two (2) years of experience in a county or district attorney office, city attorney, or other governmental attorney with experience in areas related to the job duties; or three (3) years of civil law experience as an attorney in relevant areas

Handle Motions to Adjudicate and Motions to Revoke from filing through appeal in Class B and A misdemeanors as assigned by the County Attorney
Handle Protective Order cases, mental commitments, Adult and Child Protective Services and Environmental Cases
Handle Juvenile cases from intake through appeal as assigned by the County Attorney
Handle all Bond Forfeiture Cases from intake through appeal
Attend and conduct court hearings as needed to perform all of the above duties.
Conduct research on various legal issues and questions as they arise in order to provide authority for the position or advice given to the various County Departments
Advise all law enforcement as needed

Advise Commissioners Court as needed and attend Commissioners Court meetings as directed by the County Attorney.

The Holistic Services Division of the Harris County Public Defender's Office ("the PDO") seeks to hire an experienced, enthusiastic civil attorney. The attorney will work on a team of civil attorneys and paralegals that handles cases including civil protective order defense, adult and juvenile record-sealing, asset forfeiture cases, administrative license revocations, mitigation investigations, parole revocation, and other miscellaneous civil legal issues.
The PDO represents indigent clients who have been accused of misdemeanor and felony offenses in Harris County, and the Holistic Services Division aims to address collateral consequences and existing legal and non-legal issues in our clients' lives that drive them into the criminal justice system. We provide dignity and personalized attention to our clients in hopes of stabilizing their lives and reducing their chances of returning to the system.
An ideal candidate would have significant experience handling the civil legal matters listed above as well as some criminal defense experience to aid in collaboration with clients' criminal trial attorneys. Participation in community record-sealing clinics is encouraged.

This is a 10 week paid summer law clerk position for those who will have completed some of their course work from an ABA-accredited law school and thus considered a strong 1L, or 2L or recent graduate by the beginning of Summer 2026. This position is supervised by the Deputy City Attorney for the nine-person, in-house legal counsel for the City of College Station, population approximately 120,000. The clerk will have opportunity to work with various attorneys and paralegals in the office depending on the project or work assignment. The City Attorney will sponsor the hired applicant for their State Bar of Texas Supervised Practice Card.
General Municipal Law Practice. This includes real estate, contracts, employment and other general law areas. The law clerk may assist in title review, preparation of deeds and related real estate documents, organization of documents for various transactions, proofreading of contracts, and researching legal issues related to these matters.

Criminal Law. The law clerk may assist in researching matters related to the City's police department including the investigation and prevention of criminal activity. This may include researching Fourth Amendment issues, criminal procedure and similar issues.
Litigation Management. The law clerk may assist in maintaining litigation files, reviewing strategy, pleadings, preparation for depositions, responding to discovery requests, and other litigation matters.
Land Use Law. The City has extensive zoning and land use regulations in place, and the law clerk may assist in the review and tailoring of various forms to specific situations or requests, as well as reviewing and studying of maps, plats, and other land use related items.
Other General Municipal Law Matters. The law clerk can gain experience with their legal writing skills. Unique to cities is the preparation of local ordinances, legal representation of government officials and how the law affects their conduct, such as compliance with Texas Open Meetings laws. The law clerk may assist the City Attorney's Office in its representation of departments by with proofing and reviewing policies and operating procedures. The City has numerous legal requirements on how to procure various items and services, depending on the type of item or service, the monetary amount, and the procurement method chosen or required. The law clerk may assist in researching, reviewing and preparing documents related to all of these matters, as well as attend meetings related to those matters.

Required: Must have completed some law school course work and be considered a 2L or strong 1L from an ABA-accredited law school to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. This is an in-person position with no opportunity for remote work.
Attorney I (Intake Attorney) - County Attorney

Reporting directly to a Lead Prosecutor, responsible for adult misdemeanor case intake and screening. Represents the state in Justice of the Peace and County Court at Law proceedings. Makes charging decisions, handles Pretrial Intervention Program contract reviews, and conducts legal research.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
* Performs case intake, screens, and follows-up on investigations to include reviewing police reports and evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies
* Drafts investigative requests for additional evidence makes charging decisions. and drafts charging instruments
* Performs legal research by reading statutes and codes, analytical books, online case research, and specialized practice guides
* Drafts legal documents such as motions, memoranda, and briefs
* Represents the State in Justice of the Peace Courts which includes travelling to various precincts on a weekly basis to process all criminal cases set for pretrial dockets or contested hearings, negotiates with defense attorneys and pro-se defendants, and represents the State in bench and jury trials
* Represents the State in County Courts at Law, ensuring cases have been appropriately prepared for each docket, working towards resolving the cases while in court, discussing plea options and other case needs with defense attorneys, working alongside probation officers, filing any necessary court documents, and providing information to the Court upon request
* Prepares for and represents the State in contested court hearings, to include reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, preparing trial motions, responding to defense motions, preparing trial exhibits, and conducting the hearing (i.e., jury selection, opening statements, witness examination and closing arguments)
* Reviews evidence, criminal histories, police reports, and other relevant information, and assists in the handling of discovery requests
* Interviews and communicates with victims and witnesses, and answers questions regarding the criminal justice system
* Represents the State in truancy litigation, to include screening cases and representing the State in Truancy Court hearings
* Communicates with county personnel, elected officials, judges, defense attorneys, victims and witnesses of crime, law enforcement agencies, and the general public on behalf of the County Attorney's Office

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
