4-County Electric company history timeline

1936

The history covering the major attempts made prior to 1936 to bring rural electrification, with its myriad of benefits, to the residents of Clay, Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Noxubee counties is one of “try, try, try again.”

1937

The initial funding for 4-County Electric Power Association included a $326,000 loan from REA and a $60,710 grant from WPA. With the funding, 4-County Electric Power Association became a reality on December 10, 1937.

1938

In January 1938 4-County rented an office over a grocery store at 14th and Main Street in Columbus.

1939

4-County became a distributor of TVA power on July 25, 1939, and power was available to energize 700 miles of line to serve 1,224 consumer/members.

August 4, 1939, almost two years after the 4-County project was organized, dedication ceremonies and an Electric Exposition were held at the Mississippi State College stadium in Starkville.

In 1939, Florida’s legislature passed the Rural Electrification Cooperative Law.

1940

The first Tri-County Electric Cooperative meeting was held July 30, 1940, at 8:30 p.m. at the Madison County Courthouse.

1, 1940, and the construction of power lines began.

1950

In 1950, the Board of Trustees purchased the St John’s Seminary of Learning building on Duval St in Madison, Fla., where the Co-op’s headquarters would be located for nearly 40 years.
