Paul Burton, JD, MBA - Biography • Paul Burton has been the CEO of Akan Biosciences since December 2018. Akan is a biotech startup based in Maryland developing regenerative medicinal therapeutics. In September, the Company expects to start a Phase 2A trial for a cellular therapy for osteoarthritis of knee. • Through Burton Advisory, Inc. Paul provides strategic and financial advice to healthcare companies. Clients include a mix of early stage biotech as well as some digital healthcare companies such as Cancer IQ, Care Advisors and 4D Healthware. • In addition, Paul is currently an Entrepreneur In Residence at Northwestern University supporting students and faculty with healthcare oriented commercialization projects. • He was the CEO of ResQ Pharma, Inc. from July 2015 through December 2018. • He co-founded Vivacelle Bio, Inc. and was employed as its CFO and a member of its Board of Directors (BOD) from 2012 through 2015. • He is a Member of MATTER, a Chicago based healthcare incubator and the Bunker Labs, an Incubator started in Chicago for U.S. military veterans. • Paul has over 20 years of experience in corporate finance and strategic advisory including as an investment banker starting with Salomon Brothers in NYC and later in London (now Citigroup Corporate & Investment Bank) and as a VP at GE Capital in Stamford, CT. • He worked as the CFO for a unionized specialty construction contracting company for 3 years in Illinois. • Paul is published in several peer reviewed scientific research journals including the European Journal of Pharmacology. • Served as a U.S. Regular Army Commissioned Officer (Infantry) upon completion of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Army ROTC program in 1990 (Distinguished Military Graduate). • He is former Member of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) MBA Advisory Board and UIUC College of Law Recent Alumni Advisory Board. • Paul served as a Board Trustee for Evanston History Center formerly known as the Evanston Historical Society from June 2014 to June 2020. • He serves as Finance Chair for Hemenway United Methodist Church (Evanston). • Paul has enjoyed living in Evanston with wife and son since 2007.
