How to Highlight Your Experience on a Resume When You Have None

Here’s what one user, Diana, shared:

Zippia guided me in creating a detailed and professional resume. I was able to download it with unlimited access to all features.

You DO Have Experience

While you might feel that you have no experience, that’s not entirely accurate. You possess life experiences, potential internship opportunities, and valuable experiences from your academic journey. All of these contribute significantly to your qualifications!

Let’s begin with your summary.

Summary

Here’s an example: Recent graduate with a B.F.A. in English. Strong writing and editing abilities, highly goal-oriented, and organized.

Or

Recent Economics graduate seeking an Accountant position at Billy Bob’s Building Firm (or customize as necessary).

The key is to keep your summary concise and impactful, quickly conveying who you are and what you seek.

Experience Section

Next up, the most significant hurdle for many recent graduates: filling out your experience section. Avoid including details about unrelated jobs like waitressing, yet you also want to steer clear of leaving this section empty.

So, what should you do?

Focus on your skills. Inform your prospective employer about your strengths.

For instance, you can list your skills in bullet points and elaborate on each one below:

  • Exceptional Time Management Skills
  • Met rigorous deadlines for the university’s newspaper, The Wolverine Herald.
  • Oversaw deadlines and assignments for other contributors as Editor in Chief.
  • Etc.

It’s crucial to include class projects, coursework, volunteer experiences, and anything else pertinent to the roles you’re applying for. While your work experience section may not be lengthy, you can certainly enhance it with meaningful details.

Don’t hesitate to specify the impact of your contributions! For example, if you increased your school paper’s readership during your tenure, mention the percentage increase—20%? 30%? Highlight your achievements confidently.

Work History

If you have held jobs during your college years or prior, fantastic! Include those. If you’ve completed internships, be sure to highlight them as well. The main goal is to emphasize relevant experiences. While waitressing may not align perfectly with your desired role at an ad agency, you can still mention the valuable interpersonal and organizational skills gained from that job.

Moreover, there’s one more thing you can do.

Create a new resume to secure more interviews.

Having a standout resume will give you an edge over other candidates. You can build it using our resume builder. Here’s what your resume might look like:

Highlight Your Skills

As we’ve mentioned, if you’re lacking work experience while crafting your resume, be generous in showcasing your skills. Fill your resume with your strongest attributes. Remember, you’re likely applying for entry-level positions alongside other recent graduates with similar backgrounds. Everyone needs that first job—who knows, the next application you submit could be for your ideal role. Let your skills shine!

Wishing you the best of luck!
