How We Determined the Best Cities for Civil Engineers

At Zippia, we engage with a diverse range of job seekers to understand their priorities. Our research has identified two key factors that job seekers focus on:

  • Job availability
  • Compensation

To identify the best cities for civil engineers in the U.S., we evaluated job availability and salary levels based on the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our analysis considered the following criteria:

  • Location quotient: A metric indicating how prevalent civil engineering jobs are in a specific city.
  • Average annual salary for civil engineers.
  • Average annual salary for entry-level positions.

To ensure a fair comparison of salary data across cities, we adjusted the figures according to the cost of living in each state.

This analysis yielded data for 360 metropolitan areas nationwide. We defined each city by its primary metropolitan area—for example, the “Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA NECTA Division” was simplified to Boston.

We ranked each city based on our criteria from 1 to 360, with 1 being the best. The cities were averaged into a Job Score, with the lowest score indicating the best city for civil engineers in America.
