How We Determined the Best Job Markets in Indiana

To analyze the job markets, we utilized the most recent Census American Community Survey data for Indiana’s metropolitan areas, focusing on cities with a civilian workforce exceeding 5,000.

While the unemployment rate is a valuable indicator of job availability, it is just one aspect of a complex job market. We took a comprehensive approach to evaluate the best job markets in Indiana.

Each metropolitan area was ranked from 1 to 71 in four key categories:

  • Unemployment Rate
  • Change in Unemployment Rate
  • Household Income Change
  • Current Average Household Income

A lower score in each category is more favorable. For instance, the Lebanon area had the lowest unemployment rate at 1.13%, securing its top spot in that category. The scores from all four categories were averaged to produce the final rankings. The final list ranks the 71 metro areas from 1 to 71, with lower scores indicating stronger job markets.
