From financial services to the beauty industry, multilevel marketing companies are taking the world by storm. The profitable business strategy has afforded many multilevel marketing companies in the United States the opportunity to find success in their industries and, in doing so, has helped to employ millions of hard-working Americans.

Multilevel marketing, which is also referred to as MLM, is a business strategy and sales structure that some businesses use to boost revenue streams. In a multilevel marketing company, members are encouraged to recruit new sales representatives and, in doing so, receive a portion of the sales that the recruiter makes.

The large majority of multilevel marketing businesses in the United States provide tools and resources to entrepreneurs — the members who sell their products — with the expectation that each sales representative will conduct their business at various locations.

The direct sales model used by multilevel marketing companies allows businesses to bypass having to operate a fixed retail store and instead rely on members to give presentations in homes and businesses across the country to make sales.

While salespeople profit from each product sale, multilevel marketing companies are often investigated for legitimacy by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). They have even been under fire in previous years with allegations that they operate similarly to an illegal pyramid scheme.

Still, there is ample opportunity in multilevel marketing companies, as shown through the facts and figures surrounding America’s largest, most profitable MLMs.

Nationally, there are several major players in multilevel marketing. To break it down, we’ve assembled a list of the ten largest multilevel marketing companies in the United States, based on their reported annual sales and revenues in 2020.

  1. Amway. Ada, Michigan
2020 Annual Sales Or Revenue: $8.5 billion
2020 Sales Or Revenue Growth Rate: +2.0%
    Number Of Employees: 15,000

It’s no surprise that the country’s biggest and most well-known multilevel marketing company has been around for quite some time. Founded in 1959, Amway has been using MLM business strategies to sell nutrition, health, beauty, personal care, and home care products for more than 60 years.

Though Amway’s headquarters is in Michigan, the multilevel marketing company is a global operation. Beginning in the 1970s, Amway began expanding internationally and now conducts business in Australia, Europe, Asia, Japan, Latin America, China, Africa, India, and Russia, just to name a few.

With more than 800 product patents and thousands of salespeople, or Amway Independent Business Owners, selling items in over 100 countries worldwide, Amway, which has previously been ranked as one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, is on track for continued success.

  2. Herbalife Nutrition. Los Angeles, California
2020 Annual Sales Or Revenue: $5.5 billion
2020 Sales Or Revenue Growth Rate: +13.6%
    Number Of Employees: 8,000

Herbalife Nutrition is one of the more popular multilevel marketing companies in the United States. Based in Los Angeles, California, the global nutrition company uses MLM sales strategies to employ independent entrepreneurs to become Herbalife Nutrition distributors and provide personalized health solutions.

The billion-dollar business sells meal replacement protein shakes, teas, aloes, energy, fitness, and nutrition products to health and wellness enthusiasts in more than 90 countries worldwide. Their popularity is untestable, with previous surveys ranking Herbalife Nutrition meal replacement shakes as the best brand in the world.

With an ever-increasing revenue growth rate and an estimated 4.8 million Herbalife Nutrition protein shakes consumed every day, this health-focused MLM leads the way in consumer nutrition sales.

  3. The Avon Company. New York, New York
2020 Annual Sales Or Revenue: $3.6 billion
2020 Sales Or Revenue Growth Rate: +23.89%
    Number Of Employees: 23,000

When it comes to beauty products, this multilevel marketing company is a leader in North America. The privately held company distributes products under the Avon name and operates independently from the larger global enterprise, Avon Products, Inc.

Throughout its 135 year history, Avon has relied on independent sales representatives across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada to sell their award-winning line of skincare, color cosmetics, personal care products, and fragrances.

Globally, Avon continually ranks as one of the largest beauty companies, as well as one of the biggest direct-selling enterprises, so their success in the United States and rising North American revenues are hardly surprising.

  4. Mary Kay. Addison, Texas
2020 Annual Sales Or Revenue: $3 billion
2020 Sales Or Revenue Growth Rate: -16.7%
    Number Of Employees: 5,000

Based in Texas, this billion-dollar, privately owned multilevel marketing company was founded by Mary Kay Ash in 1963. Not only is Mary Kay one of the largest MLM companies in the United States, but it has also been previously named the sixth largest network marketing company in the world.

Using multilevel marketing business strategies, Mary Kay sells cosmetics through independent salespeople, or beauty consultants, in dozens of countries worldwide.

As part of the MLM structure, beauty consultants earn income by directly selling products to people in their community or receiving a commission on wholesale purchases made by members they recruit.

Mary Kay is, perhaps, best known for its pink Cadillac advertisements. As an incentive to their nearly 3 million beauty consultants, the company gifts free cars to their top sellers, provided that they meet specific qualifications. Although there are various car prizes offered today, the pink Cadillac remains the top reward.

  5. Nu Skin. Provo, Utah
2020 Annual Sales Or Revenue: $2.58 billion
2020 Sales Or Revenue Growth Rate: +7.0%
    Number Of Employees: 5,000

Although Nu Skin has found success as a multilevel marketing company, it has also faced backlash. The MLM giant has been the center of numerous investigations, including ones by the Federal Trade Commission and the Chinese government. The latter of which resulted in a federal lawsuit, which Nu Skin settled for $47 million.

  6. Melaleuca. Idaho Falls, Idaho
2020 Annual Sales Or Revenue: $2.7 billion

The multilevel marketing company reportedly had more than 2 million client investment accounts and insured approximately 5 million lives in 2018, making Primerica one of the top issuers of term life insurance coverage in North America.

Using a traditional MLM sales strategy, Primerica targets middle-class people and families, with household incomes between $30,000 and $100,000 per year, in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

2020 Sales Or Revenue Growth Rate: -3.0%
    Number Of Employees: 10,698

Although Tupperware is no longer the largest multilevel marketing company in the United States, it continues to be one of the most well-known MLM businesses.

Tupperware utilizes MLM business strategies and a network of independent members or salespeople to sell their line of kitchen preparation and serving products and plastic food and home storage containers. Today, the company internationally distributes its products via nearly two million salespeople.

Tupperware was made especially popular in the 1950s by the direct marketing and sales strategies of Tupperware parties. This party setting allowed people, predominantly women, to earn money while at home, and lead to substantial company growth.

Originally founded in 2000 by Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, the company was quickly bought by Estée Lauder and sold in national department stores. In 2007, however, the doctors bought the company back and launched a consumer-connected commerce business model, using MLM sales strategies to increase profits.

Since 2008, the skincare company has seen excessive amounts of growth. Rodan and Fields now have more than 300,000 independent consultants or salespeople and over two million preferred customers. The multilevel marketing firm has also expanded into Canada, Australia, and Japan.
