In 1809, François Magendie studied the effect of nux vomica (a strychnine-containing plant drug) on dogs, and demonstrated that the spinal cord was the site of its convulsant action.
Furthermore, he published Outline of Pharmacology in 1885 and is regarded as largely responsible for Germany’s preeminence in the pharmaceutical industry prior to World War II.
The first chair in pharmacology in this country was established in 1890 at the University of Michigan by John Jacob Abel who had trained under Schmiedeberg.
The common flu alone killed hundreds of millions; the 1918 flu pandemic killed 50 to 100 million people – three to five percent of the world’s population – across the world.
