Supervises inmate activities, prevents escapes, and maintains order, discipline and security;
Takes appropriate action in emergency situations in accordance with established riot, hostage, fire, and disaster plans;
Escorts prisoners to and from courts and the Adult Detention Center;
Processes inmates in and out of the Adult Detention Center;
Oversees inmates in a specific area of the Adult Detention Center;
Directs or escorts all inmates in an assigned area;
Keeps a continual count of inmates in an assigned area;
Oversees the handling and security of inmate property;
Investigates complaints from inmates or the public concerning missing, misplaced, or mishandled inmate property;
Transports, by vehicle, inmates, and other individuals in custody;
Ensures accurate and current files are maintained on all supply transactions and office equipment repair;
Performs routine law enforcement duties as required (e.g., traffic enforcement, accident response and investigation, criminal investigations, etc.)

Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: high school diploma or a GED issued by a state department of education.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license at the time of appointment.
Current Certification as a Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a U.S. citizen;
Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, polygraph examination, and a psychological examination;
Must be able to obtain a Class "A" medical rating in the assigned medical group before the appointment;

Employees in this pre-trainee-level, non-safety position work on a part-time/as needed, basis while attending an accredited college toward earning their Associates of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or a related field. This class is assigned to perform crime prevention and investigation activities. Reserve/Part-time Law Enforcement Deputies have full arrest authority, but can exercise those powers only during specific tours of duty or in response to violent crimes in progress in plain view. Reserve/Part-time Deputies are specifically prohibited from enforcing traffic laws when not on duty.
Reserve/Part-time Deputies are bonded with the same coverage provided to full-time Deputies and are eligible for the agency's death and injury benefits.
In accordance with Chapter 943.135, Florida Statutes, if you are authorized by the Sheriff to belong to the Part-time/Auxiliary Unit, you will be required to complete 40 hours of mandatory retraining every four years to include all mandated in-service training to maintain your certification after separation from the Escambia County Sheriff's Office. This training is necessary to maintain registration with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office through FDLE. Approval to be registered with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office will be made by the Sheriff on a case-by-case basis.
It will be the responsibility of the Reserve/Part-time Deputy to periodically contact the Training Section to review the courses being offered in order to comply with the requirements for mandatory retraining and in-service training.
The Reserve/Part-time Deputy will be required to volunteer a MINIMUM of 16 hours per month in a law enforcement capacity and must attend a MINIMUM of 70% of the mandatory monthly Reserve/Part-time meetings for the calendar year. The Reserve/Part-time Deputy is also subject to emergency call-out beyond the mandatory volunteer hours during times of need ordered by the Sheriff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Responds to calls for service or complaints from citizens.
Patrols an assigned area to enforce local, State, and Federal laws, including applicable traffic laws and related traffic control activities.

You will be required to take and pass a Physical Agility Test (P.A.T.) at the beginning of the pre-employment process in order to proceed. This course must be completed in under 6 minutes and 4 seconds (6:04). The tasks associated with this test measure specific physical abilities which include:

The Deputy Sheriff Trainee (Adult Detention) will attend the Stanislaus County Adult Detention CORE academy. This individual escorts, receives, registers, controls, supervises and cares for incarcerated persons and may be assigned to either the Sheriff's Detention Center (SDC) East and West Facilities, Minimum Housing Unit or Re-entry and Enhanced Alternatives to Custody Training Center (REACT). Deputies must be mature, emotionally stable and able to work effectively in an environment that is often hostile, unpredictable and occasionally unpleasant. Deputies must have the ability to direct and instruct groups of incarcerated persons; have a tolerant attitude towards those confined; be able to respond to a wide variety of situations and exercise sound judgment. Deputy Sheriff-Custodial personnel are peace officers pursuant to 830.1 (c), whose authority extends to any place in the state only while engaged in the performance of the duties of his or her respective employment and for the purpose of carrying out the primary function of employment relating to his or her custodial assignments, or when performing other law enforcement duties directed by his or her employing agency during a local state of emergency. This classification should not be confused with that of the Deputy Sheriff, whose authority to act as a peace officer has no time restrictions.
Trainees are expected to attend class regularly, maintain an acceptable grade point average, display class leadership, and conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the rules, regulations, policies and general orders of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. This non-sworn training position learns general police work, and under close supervision, participates in a comprehensive training program. Performs other related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This position is an entry-level, non-sworn position in the Police Department. Incumbents are currently attending a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy on a full-time or part-time basis and must satisfactorily pass all of the requirements that lead to the possession of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in addition to passing all phases of the background process before becoming candidates for the sworn position of Police Officer. This is a full-time (40 hour/week) position. Those enrolled in the Police Academy on a part-time basis (less than 40 hours/week), will make up the remaining time through work experience at the Stockton Police Department.
Appointment in this position is limited to the duration of the Police Academy. Academic progress and physical achievement are closely monitored during this training period. Upon successful completion and graduation from the Police Academy, recruits shall be appointed to the position of probationary Police Officer. Emphasis is placed on community-based policing, familiarization between law enforcement and community residents, and collaborative problem solving. An assignment to this classification is temporary. Failure to graduate from the academy within the prescribed training period will result in termination from City of Stockton employment.

The County furnishes the trainee a service pistol, holster, gun belt, handcuffs, handcuff case, and academy uniforms.
Deputy Sheriff Trainees may also be considered for the Adult Detention core academy. The completion of the academy and successful graduation, trainees may be eligible to promote into a full-time position with the department as a Deputy Sheriff Custodial.
Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments. Position performs related duties as assigned. Part-time County employees are automatically enrolled into the 401a program.

While attending the Basic POST Academy the Deputy Sheriff Trainee will complete State mandated training requirements learning to fulfill the duties of a Deputy Sheriff Trainee, which includes the following typical tasks:
* Patrol assigned areas for the protection of life and property;
* Serve legal papers such as subpoenas, summonses, complaints, and writs of attachment, execution and restitution;
* Collect fees due the County and serve warrants and make arrests;
* Conduct coroner's investigations and secure property;
* Investigate accidents and administer first aid;
* Receive and answer complaints;
* Prepare reports and keep routine records;
* Assist in the investigation of violations and/or offenses committed by or against juveniles;
* Interrogate persons suspected of crimes and prepare evidence for court presentation;
* Appear in court as a witness or arresting officer, transport prisoners, work in a custodial facility or in the courts; and
* Perform identification and photographic work, and administrative or special assignments.
KNOWLEDGE
* Principles and practices of law enforcement and community regulations; and
* Criminal law with particular reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizures.

The Sheriff's Office will administer the POST Entrance Exam, which will include a written and physical agility test. Candidates must obtain a minimum T-Score of 42 on the entrance exam (written test);

Employment Details
This is a part-time, non-benefited position, limited to 999 hours per fiscal year. Part-Time Police Officers are employees of the San Angelo Police Department and are paid directly by the City of San Angelo; however, the position is not covered under Civil Service.
