Alcohol & Drug Abuse Division company history timeline

1973

In 1973, under the Comprehensive Alcohol and Drug Treatment Act, the General Assembly gave the Department responsibility for developing programs for treating and preventing alcohol and drug abuse.

2000

The Department’s name was changed to the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities in 2000 as a result of a comprehensive revision of the mental health and developmental disability law.

2001

The revision also expanded the Department’s licensure authority from only facilities or agencies to include services, effective March 1, 2001.

2012

Then, on July 1, 2012, the Department’s name was changed to the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
