1849

The Gold Rush of 1849, spurred by the discovery of the metal in the San Francisco area, resulted in $2 billion worth of gold being extracted from the region, according to History.

Ten years after the 1849 California Gold Rush, new deposits were gradually found throughout the West.

1896

And by 1900, the American coal industry had raised 57 million tons of anthracite and 212 million tons of bituminous coal.

1955

Since opening in 1955, the mammoth Reserve Mining plant had dumped approximately 67,000 tons of tailings into Lake Superior each day.

1974

On April 20, 1974, United States District Court judge Miles Lord ruled that the Reserve Mining Company’s enormous iron ore–processing plant perched on the edge of Lake Superior—the largest of the Great Lakes—must immediately stop dumping tailings into the lake.

2000

It is a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico. It was founded in 2000.

2012

On Friday, January 27, 2012, Chief Jackie Thomas of the Yinka Dene Alliance met with Alberta and Northwest Territory First Nations to state the alliance’s opposition to the Northern Gateway pipeline.

2013

Of these, Giant mine was the largest producer in the Northwest Territories, generating just over 7 million ounces of gold and just over $3.3 billion (adjusted to 2013 values) over the mine’s life.
