1800

“The family history goes that the first Andrews that came to Fiji in the early 1800’s was named Brent Andrews.

1801

The first time my surname appears on a recent family tree was in 1801.

1805

An 1805 map shows the area as the Cherokee settlement Toonatla.

1810

John Andrews, born in 1746 in Cecil county, a clergyman in Pennsylvania who became the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania in 1810.

1828

John and James Andrews who were transported from Dorset in 1828.

1838

By the time of the removal of the Cherokee Indians in 1838, it was known as Konehetee, or valley.

1850

Abraham and Sarah Andrews and their family from Wiltshire who came to Australia in the 1850’s and settled in Singleton, NSW.

1853

Robert and Elizabeth Andrews who left Dorset for Australia in 1853 (Elizabeth died during the passage).

1854

and James Andrews who left county Derry with his three sons in 1854 (they settled in Manning valley, NSW).

1890

W.P. Walker, a pioneer merchant who operated a general store in Valleytown, was the first person to build on the new town site in the winter of 1890.

1894

ANDREWS & GEORGE COMPANY LIMITED was founded and incorporated in 1894 by William H.Andrews and Edward W. George in Japan.

1898

F.P. Cover, a practical and successful tanner in Browntown, Virginia, constructed the F.P. Cover and Sons Tannery in Andrews in 1898.

1901

Todd Andrews, born there in 1901, was an Irish nationalist who helped form Fianna Fail.

1903

Then in 1903, Barker organized and constructed the Cherokee Tanning Extract Company.

1905

The town was officially incorporated on February 21, 1905 with David Samuel Russell appointed as the first mayor of the new town.

In 1905, he attended a session of the state legislature and secured passage of an act incorporating the town of Andrews.

1911

The Andrews Lumber Company was organized in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania by E.C. Campbell, who erected a large band saw mill in Andrews in 1911.

1920

In the autumn of 1920, the Peavine railroad, running between Andrews and Hayesville was completed.

1926

Todd Andrews, the Irish nationalist, was a founding member of Fianna Fail in 1926.

1930

From its small beginnings, Andrews grew from two dwellings and one store to a progressive village of 1,748 citizens in 1930.

1932

His story was that of his family, the Andrews family of Comber, a story he researched during the years 1932-41.

1940

John was a politician who became the second Prime Minister of Northern Ireland in 1940 while Thomas was managing director of the Harland & Wolff company in Belfast that built the Titanic.

In 1940, Laborer and Housewife were the top reported jobs for men and women in the USA named Andrews.

1948

The first GMSR excursion train rolled into Andrews on October 15, 1988. It was the first passenger train in town since 1948 when that service in Andrews was closed.

1950

Eamonn Andrews, born in Dublin, was a popular British TV presenter of the 1950’s and 60’s.

1958

The finished product did not appear until 1958 – Nine Generations, A History of the Andrews Family of Comber, Co Down.

1965

Julie Andrews is the British actress best known for her starring role in The Sound of Music in 1965.

1981

His line has been traced in Kittie LeBlanc’s 1981 book Andrews Family.

1988

On Tuesday, July 18, 1988, the state of North Carolina purchased the 67-mile scenic railroad line (from Dillsboro to Murphy) from Norfolk Southern for $650,000.

The first GMSR excursion train rolled into Andrews on October 15, 1988.

In 1988 the state leased the 67 miles of track to the Great Smoky Mountain Railway (GSMR) for a 25-year period.

1999

In late 1999 GSMR sold out to American Heritage Railways, owners of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado.

2021

Former undergraduate student, Sophia Kniaz, has been awarded the Regional Award for Europe in Classical Studies & Archaeology by the Global Undergraduate Awards 2021 Programme.
