At Applied Materials' CTO office, we are developing optical interconnect solutions for the next generation hyperscale computing and AI/ML. You will be working with a highly capable international team to develop advanced photonics packaging solution.
You will lead optomechanical design, optical sub-assembly design, micro optics, fixture and tooling development. Those fixtures and tooling are expected to achieve micron level assembly accuracy.
You are also expected to design / develop multi-fiber optical connectors and work with external vendors to develop connector eco-system.
You are also expected to be familiar with various materials used in photonics industry, including but not limited to: glass, epoxy, silicon and other related materials.
You daily activities includes working with 3D solid models, drawings, and documentation utilizing GD&T principles; assessing designs against environmental requirements; With a product focus, the individual will actively partner with other engineering disciplines and operations personnel to develop solutions that adhere to DFT and DFM requirements.
D in optics, or mechanicalengineering is desired. Industrial experience in optical communication industries is required.
You should have expert level knowledge on optomechanical design, Solidworks or ProE, GD&T and ASME 14.5. Understanding of FEA for stress and thermal analysis, ideally understand the use of Ansys Mechanical and Icepak simulation tools

Applied Materials' Austin Engineering Department is searching for an intern to join our team in summer 2026! Research and rapid development group designing, procuring, testing, and iterating prototype parts as part of a team including physicists, EEs, and software experts. The position will entail the following:
+ CAD modeling in Creo or Solidworks
+ Mechanical design and FEA of components
+ Working with suppliers on rapid prototyping and best manufacturing methods

Generate 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies
Create and maintain engineering documentation

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Sensitivity and Throughput Roadmap for both BBP and Rapid Divisions. BBP (Broadband Plasma) Division provides market-leading patterned wafer optical inspection systems for leading-edge IC manufacturing. Rapid Division provides market-leading reticle inspection solutions for the semiconductor industry.
In this role, you will be working with Research Scientists, Optics Engineers and other MechanicalEngineers to develop R&D Inspection Benches to validate new inspection methods that could drive the future of both BBP and Rapid divisions.
These R&D Inspection Benches would be utilized to run actual inspections on customers wafers and reticles in order to validate the values of the proposed new inspection methods. The inspection results from these R&D benches will determine the adoption/implementation on the actual systems/products, thus the roadmap.
In this role you will:
Obtain thorough understanding of the fundamental physics behind the new proposed inspection methods and the underlying problems these new methods are aimed to solve.
Work together with Optics Engineers to develop the layout, followed by design concepts and detailed designs to build these R&D Inspection Benches from scratch.
Work together with Optics Engineers to perform optical alignment on these benches.
Own driving the precision mechanism design, vibration control and other related design parameter to meet bench requirements (such as cleanliness) that are critical for the wafer and reticle inspection systems.

Job Description/Preferred Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated engineer to join our team in the development, release, and support of KLA's Film/OCD Metrology products. This role is critical to advancing our technology and solving complex customer challenges through deep technical understanding and innovative problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the development and release of advanced Film/OCD Metrology products.
Develop a deep understanding of customer applications and use cases.
Translate customer challenges into actionable problem statements.
Design and execute data collection plans to support product development and troubleshooting.
Analyze data and recommend corrective actions or design improvements.
Communicate effectively through oral presentations, written reports, meeting minutes, and project summaries.
Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, applications, and customer support teams.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
