By mid-1997, the company had converted all its long products capacity from the traditional integrated process using pig iron to electric arc furnaces--known in the trade as minimills--using scrap steel.
In 2001 it merged with the Spanish company Aceralia and the French company Usinor to form Arcelor.
Arcelor was created in February 2002 through the merger of Arbed (Luxembourg), Aceralia (Spain) and Usinor (France). Arcelor also had major steel production facilities in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Brazil and Argentina.
ArcelorMittal, steelmaking company that, when formed from the merger of the Arcelor and Mittal steel companies in 2006, was the world’s largest.
But in light of the deteriorating economic situation during 2008, ArcelorMittal suspended most investment activity by the end of the year.
