1817

Located on the first floor of the Mississippi State Capitol, the Hall of Governors features portraits of the former governors of Mississippi since the creation of the Mississippi Territory in 1798 and the state in 1817.

1842

The Mississippi Governor’s Mansion, first occupied in 1842, is the second oldest official executive residence in continuous use in the United States.

1900

From its beginnings-when a young Raleigh attorney named William J. Peele began pressing for the creation of a state historical agency in 1900 and met with success three years later-the organization has enjoyed notable leadership.

1903

Our state's historical program, founded in 1903, has evolved into what is now our Office of Archives and History (OAH).

1934

Congress established the National Archives in 1934 to preserve and care for the records of the United States Government.

1971

However, structural deterioration over the next seventy years was left uncorrected, and by 1971 was so advanced that the first family was advised to vacate the building.

2001

In 2001 it was renamed the Office of Archives and History.

2022

The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) and the Mississippi Museum of Art (MMA) are undertaking a year-long initiative in 2022 to expand understanding of the Great Migration and its impact on Mississippi and the nation.
