1961

1961 KAET (Arizona Educational Television) signs on the air Jan.

1968

1968 The station uses color studio cameras for the first time.

1980

1980 KAET adds translators in Prescott.

1983

1983 Live heart surgery from St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center performed by Doctor Ted Diethrich is seen internationally.

1988

1988 The station wins the Governors’ Award from the Rocky Mountain chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for coverage of Pope John Paul II’s visit.

1990

1990 The Silver Gavel, the highest honor from American Bar Association, is awarded to KAET for “exceptional programming on the judiciary.” KAET receives the Society of Professional Journalists First Amendment Award and the state chapter’s Freedom of Information Award.

1996

1996 The station broadcasts live coverage of the first Arizona Presidential Preference Forum, leading to another Governors’ Award from the Rocky Mountain chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

2002

2002 KAET wins six regional Emmy Awards, three for “Horizon” and three for “Images of Arizona.”

2004

2004 KAET launches azpbs.org.

2008

2008 The business and administrative offices move to the newly opened Cronkite Building.

2012

2012 Cronkite News provides three hours of live election coverage.

2016

2016 Cronkite News, the news division of Arizona PBS, broadcasts three hours of live election coverage from Phoenix, Washington, D.C., New York and the United States-Mexico border.

2018

AZPM Passport usage grew 85% over 12 months and has increased 743% since 2018.

2020

NPR 89.1 achieved #1 overall ranking in radio in the Tucson Metro area in both Nielsen’s 2020 summer survey and its 2020 Continuous Diary Market trend report for September and October, and was voted the best radio station for news by readers of the Tucson Weekly for the 10th year in a row.

AZPM’s PBS 6 was the top-rated public television station for cumulative (per capita) audience among the nation’s 56 largest television markets in 2020.

In 2020, the organization pivoted to engage the community with a series of virtual activities.

2021

The At-Home Learning service continued through May of 2021.
