Atlantic Press company history timeline

1857

When the founders of The Atlantic gathered in Boston in the spring of 1857, they wanted to create a magazine that would be indispensable for the kind of reader who was deeply engaged with the most consequential issues of the day.

1869

In 1869 The Atlantic Monthly created a sensation when it published an article by Harriet Beecher Stowe about Lord Byron and his salacious personal life.

1980

Mortimer Zuckerman bought the magazine in 1980, but, despite his efforts, the publication continued to struggle.

1984

The Library's Online Local News Index (1984-current): this database will give you the citation for the article, and then you can access the full-text from the microfilm.

1999

In 1999 he sold it to David G. Bradley, owner of the National Journal Group.

2006

Elizabeth B. Alton, who lived to age 100, died in 2006 unable to convince a book publisher to release her memoir of the Miss America Competition, which spanned more than 70 years starting from the beginning.

In addition, the magazine moved its offices from Boston to Washington, D.C., in 2006.

2008

In 2008 Coates published his first book, the memoir The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood.

2015

In 2015 Coates was named a MacArthur fellow.

2019

In 2019 Coates released his first novel, The Water Dancer.
