Baltimore Symphony Orchestra company history timeline

1916

Back in 1916, boys from the Musical Settlement School had been taken to the BSO's debut concert by the superintendent, Lily Bartholomay. "And now several of those very children will be playing in the anniversary concert," she told The Sun.

11, 1916, at the Lyric Opera House.

Founded in 1916, the Baltimore SO is the only major American orchestra originally established as a branch of the municipal government.

1937

Except for a walkout by male players in 1937 resistant to admitting women in the orchestra (the men lost), the major cause of unrest during the BSO's first 100 years has been compensation.

1942

Reorganized as a private institution in 1942, it maintains close relationships with the governments and communities of the city and surrounding counties, as well as with the State of Maryland.

1946

The 30th anniversary of the BSO in 1946 attracted only enough people to fill two-thirds of the Lyric.

1965

And "for the first time in the history of symphonic music at the Lyric," The Sun reported, "Negroes occupied orchestra[-level] seats." (An African-American would not sit onstage with the rest of the players until trumpeter Wilmer Wise joined the orchestra in 1965.)

The Baltimore SO's modern history dates from 1965, when Baltimore arts patron Joseph Meyerhoff became president of the Orchestra, a position he held for 18 years.

1978

Ground was broken for the hall in November 1978 in order to provide the BSO with a top-notch concert hall befitting of a world-class orchestra.

1981

A lockout that started in the fall of 1981 extended into January.

In 1981, on its first European tour with music director Sergiu Comissiona, the BSO became the first American orchestra to perform in East Germany.

1982

After six decades of sharing the Lyric Opera House, the BSO got its own home in 1982.

The Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall has been the home of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since its opening in 1982.

1984

Baltimore Chamber Orchestra’s first performance, led by Maestra Anne Harrigan, was on January 29, 1984.

Indeed, the orchestra strives to meet the same standard established at its inception in 1984: to provide accessible, high-quality, classical music with an intimate touch.

1997

Maestro Thakar made his debut with New York Philharmonic in 1997 and has since appeared with that orchestra numerous times, along with National, San Antonio, Winnipeg and Charlotte Symphony Orchestras, among others.

1999

Orioles extend winning streak to 9, longest since 1999, and reach .500 with 4-2 come-from-behind win over Cubs

2004

BCO selected Markand Thakar for the position of music director in June 2004.

2005

With the opening of The Music Center at Strathmore in February 2005, the Baltimore Symphony became the nation’s first orchestra with year-round venues in two metropolitan areas.

The 2005 announcement of her appointment caused controversy, over reports that the orchestra players statements that they had not had enough voice in the search process.

2007

The BSO made musical history in September 2007, when Maestra Marin Alsop led her inaugural concerts as the Orchestra’s 12th music director, making her the first woman to head a major American orchestra.

After starting her tenure in 2007, she and the musicians got over the awkwardnes and developed a rapport that has generated quality music-making and a flurry of imaginative initiatives, among them the OrchKids educational project.

2009

Since becoming Music Director, Marin Alsop has made a number of recordings with the BSO. In August 2009, Bernstein’s Mass under the direction of Maestra Alsop was released on the Naxos label.

2010

In 2010, the BSO under Alsop was joined by pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet for a Decca recording of works by Gershwin including Rhapsody in Blue and the Piano Concerto.

2012

Marin Alsop conducted several pieces for the 'Star-Spangled Symphony' concert at Meyerhoff Hall in 2012. (B582167725Z.1 / Baltimore Sun)

2017

In February 2017, Peter T. Kjome became president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the orchestra.

2021

Conlon conducted his first concert with the orchestra in October 2021.
