1800

By 1800 Baptists were the largest denomination in the land.

1807

By 1825 the Hamilton Missionary Society became the Baptist Missionary Convention of the State of New York, which continued under that name until 1957 (when it became the New York State Baptist Convention), and with which the New York Baptist Association affiliated. It is important to note the founding upstate in 1807 of what soon became the Hamilton Baptist Missionary Society.

1832

One of those is The American Baptist Home Mission Society, established in New York City in 1832 to preach the gospel, establish churches and support ministry among the unchurched and destitute.

1836

By 1836, 150 home missionaries were at work in 14 states, two territories and two provinces.

1841

Perhaps it was undercut by the organization in 1841 of the New York Baptist Domestic Society of the City of New York – an illustration of the way societies was precipitated around various causes, all drawing on the same basic constituencies.

1847

Concord Church was founded in the living room of John and Hagar Washington on May 18, 1847.

Sampson White having received a call, resigned his pastorate in New York City and began his labors with the new church on July 1, 1847.”

1848

His success was far greater than he expected, for soon the foundation was built and the cornerstone laid with appropriate exercises and the house was dedicated in 1848.”

1851

Black updated his narrative after he was called to Concord in 1851.

1863

“At a meeting of the church help September 28, 1863, it was, on motion, resolved to call Brother William T. Dixon, then resident in the Eastern District, to take charge of the Concord Baptist Church of Christ.

1869

The stones, inscribed with the words: “Erected 1869,” “College of St John the Baptist,” and “Lewis Avenue,” are artifacts from a July 25, 1869, cornerstone-laying ceremony for what would become St John’s University.

Our roots date back to the opening of the original Baptist Home in 1869 in Brooklyn, New York.

1870

A major step towards improvement occurred in 1870 when the NYBA consolidated with HRBA South as the Southern New York Association, intensified as immigrants poured in, necessitated the organization of the societies for specialized tasks.

1877

In response, the Women’s Baptist Home Mission Society (WBHMS), based in Chicago, was founded in 1877, and Joanna P. Moore became its first fully commissioned missionary.

1886

A parallel development had been the forming of a Brooklyn Baptist Church Extension Society in 1886; in 20 years its work was extended to Queens.

1897

1909

The two women’s societies consolidated their work in 1909 under the name Woman’s American Baptist Home Mission Society.

1977

Our present 120 bed facility located on the edge of the historic and beautiful village of Rhinebeck, NY opened in 1977.

2010

On April 27, 2010, National Ministries reclaimed the organization’s historic names and began carrying out its ministries in the name of Jesus Christ as American Baptist Home Mission Societies.
