1892

The Sisters of Mercy first came to the Valley in 1892 to build Sacred Heart School in Phoenix.

1895

The Sisters were so moved by the sick that in 1895 they opened Arizona's first hospital, St Joseph's Hospital.

1902

Wake Forest School of Medicine (formerly Bowman Gray School of Medicine) was founded in 1902 as a two-year medical school on the campus of Wake Forest College.

1903

The Baptist Health System story began in 1903 when 30 physician members of the Bexar County Medical Society joined with more than two dozen businesspeople and professionals to organize the San Antonio Associated Charities.

1923

North Carolina Baptist Hospital opened in 1923 as an 88-bed hospital in Winston-Salem.

1924

Founded in 1924 in Louisville, Kentucky, Baptist Health is a full-spectrum health system dedicated to improving the health of the communities it serves.

1941

Later in 1941, the medical school expanded to four years and moved to Winston-Salem.

1951

1951 Baptist Hospital opens with 140 beds and a post–operative recovery room, the first in Florida and possibly the second in the United States.

1956

1956 First expansion adds 40 beds.

1956 Baptist Hospital begins working with Pensacola Junior College to create the first Associate of Arts nursing program in the southern portion of the United States.

1959

1959 A major addition opens, bringing Baptist Hospital’s bed capacity to 325.

1964

1964 A year of innovation – An expansion provides space for one of the nation’s first two outpatient surgery centers.

1969

1969 Baptist Hospital acquires the Hillhaven Home and converts it to the Rainwater Specialty Care Center (the building that later became Baptist Behavioral Health Unit).

1972

1972 Baptist Hospital completes the largest expansion in its history, bringing total bed capacity to 520.

1974

1974 Construction begins on the first medical office building adjoining Baptist Hospital.

1975

1975 The Foundation of Baptist Hospital is established August 13.

1976

1976 The Women’s Board of the Foundation established.

1977

1977 LifeFlight helicopter ambulance service is brought to Baptist Hospital, becoming the first hospital–based emergency helicopter program in Florida, the third in the United States.

1978

1978 Baptist Regional Health Services is created to extend Baptist Hospital’s sophisticated care to smaller hospitals throughout Northwest Florida and South Alabama.

1980

He helped launch General Care Corp., a small nursing home firm that Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) acquired for $78 million in 1980.

1984

1984 Construction begins on expansion of Baptist Hospital and construction of Gulf Breeze Hospital.

1986

Brenner Children's Hospital and Health Services was established in 1986.

1992

1992 Baptist Health Care acquires the psychiatric beds that were part of University Hospital.

1992 A new Heart Center is opened on the first floor of the Baptist Medical Towers.

1993

1993 The new centers for wound and infusion services are opened at Baptist Hospital.

1993 The former Century Memorial Clinic, which was operated by University Hospital, becomes a department of Jay Hospital and is renamed Century Family Health Center.

1994

1994 Baptist Health Care expands its primary care network, opening four new practices (West Side Family Medicine Center/Gulf Breeze Internal Medicine Center/ Pensacola Beach Family Medicine Center/Orange Beach Family Medicine Center) An additional existing family medicine practice is acquired.

1995

1995 Baptist Health Care’s primary care network is expanded to 14 centers.

1995 Baptist Health Care opens two new primary care centers.

1997

Vanguard Health Systems was formed in July 1997 by group of healthcare executives led by Charles Martin, Jr.

1997: Vanguard Health Systems is founded by a group of healthcare executives.

1997 Baptist Hospital broke ground on $2.5 million emergency room expansion.

1997 Jay Hospital begins a renovation project that involves refurbishing all patient rooms and nurse stations.

1997 Kugelman Cancer Center becomes first facility in region to offer radioactive seed implants for prostate cancer.

1998

First Acquisition in 1998

La Palma lost $4.5 million on net patient revenues of $36.1 million in fiscal 1998.

1999

Vanguard's revenues for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1999 were $91.5 million, twelve times those of the previous year.

1999: Three hospitals are acquired in Anaheim and Huntington Beach, California.

1999 Baptist Hospital initiates the region’s first autologous bone marrow transplant program.

2000

The net loss was narrowed to $1.4 million in fiscal 2000, when revenues were up to $304.7 million.

Vanguard boosted its Arizona operations with the acquisition of the 222-bed Phoenix Baptist Hospital in 2000.

2001

In 2001, Vanguard opened the Magnolia Surgery Center in Orange County.

2002

In 2002, Vanguard entered a joint venture with the University of Chicago Hospital Health System to buy the 200-bed Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital on the Windy City's North Side.

2003

Vanguard opened the West Valley Hospital in Goodyear, Arizona, in 2003.

The San Antonio-area Baptist Health System was acquired in 2003 in a deal worth $306 million.

2006

Since opening our doors in June 2006, Mercy Gilbert's services have maintained steady growth to keep pace with the Town of Gilbert’s ever-growing population and medical needs.

2007

Wake Forest Baptist announces that it will become completely "tobacco-free", effective July 1, 2007.

2009

In April 2009, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center opened the doors on its second expansion project.

2011

12, 2011, Baptist Health Care reached the 1,000th robotic surgery milestone, designating Baptist the most experienced and best equipped robotic surgical program in northwest Florida.

2021

Baptist announces a hybrid emergency department and urgent care center will open at Baptist Medical Park – Navarre in early 2021.
