In 1977, a Boston Hospital created a holistic trauma response for identifying and treating victims.
1978 On October 1st the first shelter in Southeastern Minnesota opened.
1979 With grants from the city of Rochester and the Bush, McKnight and Rochester Area Foundations, Women’s Shelter, Inc. purchased and renovated a seven bedroom house.
In 1980, there was also the formation of Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs.
1984 Women’s Shelter, Inc. announced the beginning of the Intervention Project for Domestic Assault (IPDA). IPDA is designed to coordinate the criminal justice system agencies in Olmsted County, creating a consistent and sensitive response to domestic assault.
1984 Received grants to purchase and operate the first Transitional House (TH) for women leaving a battered women’s shelter.
1987 The two homes were connected providing office and storage space
1991 The State granted funds to Women’s Shelter, Inc. to provide local advocacy services in Wabasha County after they moved under the umbrella of Women’s Shelter, Inc. and staffs a full time advocate.
A landmark development occurred in 1994.
1996 The Children’s House (CH) opened.
2017 Women’s Shelter, Inc. receives state money to open a third shelter to house youth who are escaping sex trafficking, exploited, or are at risk of these.
One example was the London Black Women’s Project losing out in funding applications to a larger organisation in 2019 and facing closure after 32 years of providing dedicated services in Newham in east London.
