Berkeley County School District company history timeline

1916

In approximately 1916 the site was purchased.

1917

In 1917 an auditorium and science building were built along Alston Way at Grove—now Martin Luther King Way—and 507 students received diplomas—only slightly fewer than current class expected “to walk” at the Greek Theater in June.

1920

In 1920 the main building was built.

1922

In 1922 a gymnasium building was built.

1934

The first mention of library service in Berkeley County occurred in the summer of 1934 when a reading room for the public was opened and maintained during the summer months.

1937

In June 1937 the library was moved into quarters in the Berkeley Grammar School but continued to be operated apart from the school system as a separate library open to the general public.

1938

In 1938/39, after acceptance of a master plan developed by William Gutterson, the G and H Buildings were built.

1955

In 1955, the library opened a branch in St Stephen.

1964

The district purchased land at the corner of Allston Way and Milvia and constructed the cafeteria building at this location in 1964.

1971

The library opened a branch library in Goose Creek Shopping Plaza on Red Bank Road in 1971.

1979

In 1979 the Donahue gym was built.

1991

In 1991, the current location of the Goose Creek Library branch opened at 325 Old Moncks Corner Road.

2004

The D building was completed in 2004 to house the library, student union, College and Career center, counseling offices, administration offices, dance studios, swimming pool, and some classrooms.

2006

A brand new Main Library adjoining the new Berkeley County Administration Building at 1003 United States Hwy 52 opened in April 2006.

2007

The Sangaree branch located at 595 Sangaree Parkway and the Daniel Island branch located at 2301 Daniel Island Drive, both new libraries, opened to the public in 2007.

2008

The groundwork was laid to fund a mobile library to serve Berkeley County residents in 2008, nearly 29 years after book mobile service ceased.

2011

The library celebrated its 75th anniversary in June 2011!

2014

Fully funded, it established its first scheduled stops in 2014.

2015

The facility opened in 2015.

2016

BMS was also honored as a 2016 National Beta School of Merit! The award-winning Berkeley Middle Technology Club continued to excel by finishing as the 3rd ranked overall middle school in the state at the SCTSA competition held in March.

2019

The Cane Bay Library branch, 1655 Cane Bay Boulevard, opened in 2019 as the library’s second joint-use facility sharing the building with the Cane Bay YMCA.
