BPL became an operating division within new Special Health Authority, NHS Blood and Transplant, in 2005.
BPL in its present form was created in 2010, but its heritage stretches back to the early pioneers of blood and plasma-derived medicines in the UK.
The UK’s Department of Health partly privatised BPL Group in 2013, selling a majority stake to Bain Capital.
In the US, whilst BPL Plasma has operated in the plasma collection industry for more than 25 years, BPL entered the plasma products market in 2015 when it established its BPL Therapeutics US headquarters in Durham, North Carolina.
In July 2016, Bain Capital sold BPL Holdings to Creat, a Chinese-based investment company who part own a Chinese plasma fractionator.
In 2018, Creat announced plans to integrate BPL with the German plasma products manufacturer Biotest.
