As a Youth Permanency Specialist, you'll work directly with youth and families to help them understand their permanency needs, process their history, and strengthen the relationships that support long‑term connection. The Experience of Service as a Mentor Guide: In collaboration with the Guided Mentoring team, you will focus on engaging and supporting around 5-10 high school mentors in the curriculum and practices of the Guided Mentoring program. You will help plan and facilitate lessons and activities which are fun, play-based, and help youth dream big. These activities will be delivered through weekly school day classroom programming and/or afterschool programming, as well as occasional out of school time adventure experiences.     Job Description Streetwork Project is the oldest street outreach program for homeless and street-involved youth in New York City. The program has grown from its beginnings in 1984 as a storefront project to encompass both outreach and comprehensive harm reduction services. The core service is long-term, one-on-one counseling, which is offered in a non-judgmental and holistic manner utilizing a harm reduction approach that focuses on building trust, fostering self-esteem, exploring options and choices, and empowering youth to change their high-risk behaviors. As part of our continuum of services we operate an emergency housing program for homeless youth in NYC, Streetwork Overnight. The Overnight is a 24 bed facility for youth ages 16-20. It is open from 7 pm to 10 am 7 days a week. Casual Youth Advocates work overnight hours to support the youth while they are in our crisis shelter. As part of our continuum of services, we also provide overnight outreach in teams of two seven nights a week (7 pm to 3 am), throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Casual Youth Advocates work overnight hours to meet the most disenfranchised youth while they are in crisis. Casual Youth Advocates work part-time and on-call, filling in for full-time youth advocate absences at the Overnight and Outreach program. These individuals provide comprehensive services to adolescents and young adults impacted by homelessness and involved in street activities (gangs, violence, drug use/sale and survival sex). Services provided by casual youth advocates are the same as full-time youth advocates and include assessment, case planning, case facilitation and management, counseling, referrals, outreach, crisis transportation, daily living services (food, shower, respite), and groups. These Youth Advocates coordinate with Safe Horizon supporting programs and local agencies to provide short- and long-term care necessary to meet the wide range of needs related to homeless adolescents. Responsibilities: Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients. Under direction of Family Coordinator and Family Director, providing guidance and supervision for all child signed into the program. Assist children with crafts, coloring and the fun activities. Ensure all children have current and complete Family program information. Be an active leader by participating in everyday activities. Assist all staff members in carrying out the activities of the Family Program. Able to work a variety of shifts and fill in where needed. Put in vacation requests two weeks prior to taking time off as per the vacation policy. Give a 2 week notice before resigning from this position. Attend all required All Staff Meetings. Complete all other duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience working with children of the proper age preferred. Skill and/or certification in teaching crafts, songs, stories, games, sports, aquatics and related camp activities. Excellent communication skills. Ability to exercise sensitivity dealing with individuals of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, cognitive and physical levels. Have an understanding of development characteristics of children of various ages. Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations. Must meet all pre-employment requirements including: criminal background investigation as required. Certifications required within 90 days of hire: CPR/AED, First Aid and Safe schools. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Reason position exists is to perform these functions): Parent and Family Engagement Complete child enrollment with each assigned family within required timeframe. Identify individual health and education needs, (i.e. - asthma, diabetes, behavioral) that require individualized service plans. Coordinate with parents, site team, program staff, and community partners, as appropriate, to develop, document, and communicate individual plans. Update as needed. Conduct two home visits per year with assigned families in the family's home environment to support safety, health, financial stability, life goals and aspirations. Provide information/education to families about the benefits of regular school attendance. Work with teaching team to track attendance and conduct a home visit for children with two or more consecutive unexcused absences. Education Participate in each assigned classroom at least 2 hours a week as scheduled with teaching team and Area Manager.
