“Bright of America began in 1960 in a spare room of the Bright family home, as a company called Church-Graphic Productions.
1963: Brothers Bill and John Bright established Bright of America®as a producer of notecards for women’s organizations in their hometown of Summersville, West Virginia.
In 1963, with the manufacture and sale of note cards depicting state scenes, the company became known as Bright of America and. began adding to its product line Christmas cards and placemats with state scenes.
The firm was exhibiting its plastic laminated placemats and other household/novelty products at the Chicago Housewares Show in 1973 and an Australian looked over Bright of America’s products and said he wanted to place an order.
1980: Candle production was added to production capabilities in the Summersville plant.
Throughout the 1980’s the sales growth was driven by the success of product offerings in mail order catalogs and fundraising programs sold by schools, churches, clubs and other non-profit organizations to earn money for teams, activities,trips, etc.
1990: The Bright brothers sold the business to Russ Berrie and Company, a large New Jersey based importer and marketer of gift products operating under the RUSS brand.
The company was successful in completing the first step of its restructuring exercise in the year 1998-99.
As a part of the cost management excercise it announced a VRS for its unionised employees at its factory in Bombay.Brite Automotive and Plastics (BAPL) was amalgamated with the company with effect from 1st April 1999.
Accordinlgy one equity share of Rs.10/- each of Bright Brothers Ltd was allotted for every two equity shares of Rs.10/- each of BAPL. In 2000-01 the company had set up its new manufacturing unit at Pondicherry.
2004: Russ Berrie and Company sold the company to Industrial Renaissance, a group of private investors.
On a company retreat in a mountain cabin in the winter of 2007, Oslo-based design office K8 adopts a manifest to “go green and make a difference”, which would end up being the start of BRIGHT’s history.
2010: Bright of America sold the Greenbrier/Scentex brand and closed its manufacturing plant in Summersville, WV in October, 2010.
BRIGHT Products was founded in November, 2011.
At a party in the spring of 2011, Andresen showed a 3D-printed prototype of the lamp to advertising executive Kristian Bye, who fell head over heels for its sleek smartness.
2011: Privately held Bright International, LLC acquired the Bright of America® name and logo, art libraries, trademarks, and product lines and began re-focus of the company to strong American design combined with strategic global manufacturing.
In May 2014, BRIGHT threw a big launch party for the SunBell. “It had been a fantastic journey, but sort of like taking an MBA at a top-flight university and then climbing Mount Everest without oxygen.
In September, 2014, Ingun Berget, a former university classmate of Bye’s with a law degree and a sales pedigree, came on as the new CEO.
In 2014, the UN defined solar lamps as “core relief items”. It was a turning point for BRIGHT. The Norwegian Emergency Preparedness System (NOREPS) under Innovation Norway invited BRIGHT on a trip to the UN refugee camps in Dadaab in Northern Kenya.
In December, 2016, Sunbell number 1 million left the factory. “BRIGHT has taken the step from being a small startup, to becoming the UN’s global provider of solar lamps,” Ingun Berget says.
