This role will focus on advancing the Biosafety Center of Excellence (CoE) programs, contributing to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of biosafety standards across our global operations. Example assignments may include: Support on database migration and data editing. Participate in efforts to streamline and enhance biosafety programs, including change management activities that support continuous improvement. Support the biosafety risk assessment process. Provide support to the team for a large project involving change management. Collaborate with Biosafety Officers on technical protocol reviews, training development, procedures and risk assessments to ensure safe practices. Track biosafety-related events, identify trends, and analyze root causes to inform preventive strategies. Help maintain and update biosafety manuals, guidelines, and web content to ensure accuracy and accessibility. Contribute to the evolution of our EHS program by exploring and integrating successful practices from global sites. to assist with the development and implementation of global biosafety program Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelors or Master's degree in Public Health, Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Biomedical sciences, Biotechnology, Biology, or other similar technical degree. Required: Completed at least 2 years of College course work. Must be able to work full time for a period of 9-12 weeks. Critical thinking, project management, communication, problem solving. Simple project management. Clear, concise communication, both written and in conversation. Comfortable using productivity tools such as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint to organize data and present findings. Capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines effectively within a dynamic work environment. Comfortable working independently and engaging with diverse teams and roles across various assignments. Demonstrates the ability to receive and interpret verbal and written guidance and implement changes effectively. Experience researching scientific literature via the internet or technical article databases. Preferred: Some knowledge of biosafety, public health, or EHS is preferred. Experience with video editing tools or visual communication platforms is a plus, especially for presenting complex information in engaging ways. Prior internship or work experience in biosafety, public health, environmental health and safety (EHS), or biological sciences is strongly preferred. Travel is not required. What you will be doing: The intern will primarily work with the Protein Engineering group to help develop novel therapeutic proteins that modulate immune responses. The intern will apply molecular biology techniques to build and screen protein libraries for directed evolution yeast display campaigns. This position will enable the design of expression plasmids for potential therapeutic proteins, and the student will also become familiar with in silico protein modeling/design tools (e.g., AlphaFold, Rosetta). Technical skills that will be acquired include: * Basic molecular biology techniques, including PCR, primer design, Gibson assembly, bacterial transformation, yeast transformation, and DNA sequencing analysis. * Protein expression plasmid design and production. * Recombinant protein expression via transient transfection and purification. * Yeast display library design and screening. * Basic computational protein structure prediction and design tools, including Rosetta, AlphaFold, and PyMOL visualization techniques. * Database entry and protein request queue tracking. * Lab operations support. Though a specific project has yet to be determined, the student will work on their own project focused on technology development while also shadowing the supervisor. The student will also contribute to multiple therapeutic discovery stage Vertex projects. These discovery stage projects will involve participation in multidisciplinary project teams composed of immunologists, biochemists, and structural biologists. The student will interact closely with several members of our teams, such as specialists in stem cell differentiation, screening, genetic integrity, and epigenetics. What you will need to succeed: * A passion for discovery in immunology. * At least two years of university-level coursework in a bioscience-related discipline. * Excellent communication skills, including the capacity to clearly present and explain results. * Motivation to perform precision bench work. * Aptitude to learn quickly. * Energy and flexibly to collaborate with a busy team in a rapidly evolving company. * An eagerness to contribute to Vertex's science. * Research laboratory experience strongly preferred. * Experience and/or interest in protein structure prediction/design preferred. * Some experience with computational programming preferred. * Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future.
