BROOKSHIRE TRAVEL company history timeline

1921

The first Brookshire Brothers store, started by brothers Austin and Tom Brookshire, opened on September 21, 1921.

The traditions that began in 1921 continue today and will continue into the future.

1928

In 1928, the family, which by then, included several cousins and a few friends, decided to form a common group, working toward a goal of making a strong regional company.

1929

In 1929, Wood Brookshire and cousin, W.A. Brookshire withdrew from the company, taking with them four stores in Tyler, Texas.

1938

1938 - 32 stores open and operating.

1952

In 1952, the company bought Moore Grocery and Lufkin Produce Company.

1953

Pleasant, Brookshire constructed its first grocery warehouse in 1953.

1966

1966 - Three sons of Austin Brookshire, R.A., Eugene, and Oscar, assumed leadership of the company, which grew to 69 stores in East Texas and Western Louisiana.

1968

By 1968, Brookshire Brothers moved to the west loop in Lufkin.

In 1968, to better supply these existing stores and prepare for continued growth, the company erected a 175,000-square-foot distribution center in Tyler.

1975

By 1975, despite the obstacles of a national energy crisis and a recessionary economy, the company had opened 13 new stores and made its way onto the Chain Store Age list of the fastest growing grocers.

1976

1976 - 75 stores open and operating.

1982

In 1982, the company generated $350 million in revenue, having doubled its output in just seven years.

1984

By 1984, Brookshire operated more than 70 stores and employed more than 4,000 people in its three-state region.

Chief among these developments was the company's opening of its first Super 1 Foods store in Alexandria, Louisiana, in 1984.

1991 - Brookshire Brothers began offering gasoline on its supermarket parking lots.

To keep pace with this steady expansion, the company added more than 250,000 square feet to its distribution center before the end of the decade, and in 1991, the company brought its first warehouse-type store to the area, opening a mammoth 100,000-square-foot Super 1 Foods in Plano.

1992

1992 - Brookshire Brothers opened its first pharmacy.

The company's expansion to the east resulted in the construction of a second distribution center in 1992, located in Monroe, Louisiana.

1993

In 1993 it launched the Brookshire Pharmacy Division, and by the end of the decade 73 stores would include pharmacies.

1994

The state also became the site of Brookshire's 100th store, which opened in Marksville, in 1994.

1995

By 1995, the company had established a strong presence in the Dallas suburbs, with seven stores in operation.

The company opened its first Fuel Center in 1995, and over the years another 20 Brookshire's and Super 1 Foods stores would add gas stations to their operations.

1997

1997 - Brookshire Brothers opened its first Tobacco Barn and expanded its offerings to include discount tobacco.

1999

In 1999 Brookshire was in the vanguard of retailers testing self-checkout technology, which it soon introduced to all of its stores.

2000

In 2000 the Tyler distribution center received a major upgrade, one of the most ambitious projects Brookshire ever took on.

2001

The first store opened in Plano, Texas, in 2001.

2002

In April 2002 Brookshire established an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, providing further incentive for the company's more than 12,000 employees to embrace Brookshire's culture.

2006

2006 - Brookshire Brothers becomes 100% employee owned.

2007

2007 - Brookshire Brothers merged with Polk Oil Company, which added fuel distribution and the convenience store format.

2013

2013 - Five new supermarkets and six new convenience stores were added to Brookshire Brothers’ operations.

2014

2014 - Brookshire Brothers acquires the assets of David’s Supermarkets.

2015

2015 - Brookshire Brothers sells 26 Polk Pick-It-Up convenience stores to Partners Investors C-Stores, Ltd.

2016

2016 – Brookshire Brothers celebrates its 95th birthday.

2017

2017 - Brookshire Brothers opens additional Brookshire Brothers Express formats in Hudson, TX and Valley Mills, TX.

2019

2019 - Brookshire Brothers announces plans to build a store in College Station, TX on land leased from the Texas A&M University System.
