The available position will focus on studying the molecular mechanisms of aberrant innate immune responses in the context of neurodegeneration. Dr. Mohammadi's lab is looking for computational postdocs to join ongoing efforts in systems genetics and precision medicine projects. Possible projects include, but are not limited to, modeling variation in non-coding genome, identifying regulatory variations that contribute to disease, and combining genetic data with health monitoring sensor data. Our research is at the interface of Bioinformatics, Statistics, and Computer Science. We develop mathematical frameworks and statistical models to address computational challenges of analyzing variation in genome and its effect on human health. We have recently completed a high throughput, high content screen assessing 10*6 candidate compounds for their ability to enhance autophagy flux.The aim of this project is to use medicinal chemistry generated structure-activity relationships in combination with affinity chromatography mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry experiments to determine the mechanism of action of two highly prioritized mTOR-independent autophagy activators in order to develop them into selective and potent autophagy activation drug candidates for use in ameliorating neurodegeneration.

The Torbett lab has a long-standing interest in understanding the biochemical and structural evolution of HIV in response to anti-retroviral treatment. HIV adapts to inhibitors and generates inhibitor resistance, yet maintains viral fitness. To follow individual HIV changes in the viral swarm in patients we are developing novel sequencing methodologies. The project will test the hypothesis that pharmacologic activation of the ATF6 or XBPs arm of the Unfolded Protein Response stress-responsive signaling pathway will alter the kinetic stability of transthyretin ( TTR ), possibly by altering the packing of the F87 residue. We will study whether secretory proteostasis network pathways alter the structure and modify the aggregation propensity of TTR . We will also assess whether arm-selective unfolded protein response inhibition during stress reduces TTR kinetic stability enhancing amyloidogenicity.
