Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart was founded in 1877 by the Sisters of St Francis of Penance and Christian Charity.
The Presentation Sisters arrived in Fargo from Ireland on July 22, 1882, and opened a school four days later.
On opening day, in 1889, 150 students came through the doors.
Sacred Heart Academy opened on September 8, 1897 on north Broadway.
In 1898, Sacred Heart Academy opened a new school building on Washington Street, but within 30 years it had outgrown these quarters.
In 1906 the same architects added two wings to the front of the building.
The new campus consisted of a Tudor Mansion, built in 1908, and a red brick building known as the School House.
In the 1913 expansion, the structure grew vertically rather than horizontally.
On May 11, 1930, the new Sacred Heart Academy opened with 230 students and 14 faculty members.

The Academy celebrated its 125th anniversary on the historic St Charles Avenue in 2015 and continues to stand as a registered New Orleans landmark in uptown New Orleans.
In 2016, a history museum was installed on the first floor of the building.
