1801 - Johann Pestalozzi established what is considered to the first school to teach preschool age children.
1837 - Children's Garden (Kindergarten) started in Germany by Friedrich Froebel.
1854 - The Nursery School for Children of Poor Women was opened in cooperation with Children's Hospital of New York City.
1873 - First public school kindergarten started in St Louis.
1898 - Hull House, a settlement house for immigrants, establishes a day nursery.
1907 - Maria Montesorri opens the Children's House in Rome.
Indeed, some reformers argued that mothers, like soldiers, were performing a “service to the nation” and therefore deserved public support when they lacked a male breadwinner. Thus she and her Hull House colleagues, including Julia Lathrop, who would go on to become the first chief of the United States Children’s Bureau when it was founded in 1912, called for a policy to support mothers so they could stay at home with their children.
1926 - National Association for the Education of Young Children is founded.
By 1930, nearly every state in the union had passed some form of mothers’ or widows’ pension law, making this the policy of choice for addressing the needs of low-income mothers and pushing child care further into the shadows of charity.
These groups failed to persuade Congress to pass the 1946 Maternal and Child Welfare Act, which would have continued federal funding for child care, but they did win public child care provisions in New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. and in California.
Finally, in 1954, Congress found an approach to child care it could live with: the child care tax deduction.
1964 - Head Start is funded by the Economic Opportunities Act.
As Provided for under the 1965 legislation, the services for which hospital insurance benefits were payable included: A. Inpatient hospital services for a maxilmn of 90 days in each benefit period.
During the 11-month period between enactment of the Social Security Amendments of 1965 and the start of operations, the administrative design for operation of the new program was established.

Beginning July 1, 1966, medical insurance benefits were payable for physicians' services, home health services, and numerous other medical and health services rendered in and out of medical institutions.
Future general enrollment periods were to be from October 1 to December 31, in each odd year beginning in 1967.
The same protection, financed from Federal general revenues, was provided under a special transitional provision for essentially all persons not eligible for social security or railroad retirement benefits who attained age 65 before 1968.
1969 - The first Kindercare center is opened.
1982 - National Association for Family Day Care is founded.
1985 - San Francisco becomes the first large city to require developers to set aside space of funds for child care space.
1985 - National Academy of Early Childhood Programs is established by NAEYC for voluntary accreditation of center based programs.
1988 - The United States Department of Education establishes Even Start, a parent education/literacy program.
The history of the CCDBG and rules to administer the program date back to 1990.
The first regulations governing the CCDBG went into effect on August 4, 1992.
1996 - The Stand for Children Campaign begins, initiated by the Children's Defense Fund.
1996 - Provider Appreciation Day first celebrated.
1997 - Bill Clinton reestablishes the White House Conference on Children.
These rules, implementing the child care provisions of PRWORA, went into effect August 24, 1998.
ACF published regulations that established the CCDF program in 1998.
2001 - NAEYC celebrates its 75th anniversary.
2005 - Operation Military Child Care is started to support the child care needs of parents who are activated and deployed.
Through improving legislation and investment, China made great strides in the improvement of MCH. After 2009, the comprehensive health care reform laid an institutional basis for the development of MCH and promotion of health equity.
