Together they founded the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA) in 1993. "Our original vision was to get information and resources into people's hands and to let them know they weren't alone," according to Fowler.

Community Caregivers, Inc. was founded in 1994 in Altamont, NY as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

The National Alliance for Caregiving was founded in 1996.

Beginning with the 1997 research study, Caregiving in the United States, conducted in partnership with AARP, NAC has played a pivotal role in shaping public policy for family caregivers and those in their care.

Caregiving purchased its current properties in 1998.

In June, 2012, John Schall was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of NFCA – only the second CEO in NFCA’s history.

On January 1, 2013, NFCA was renamed the Caregiver Action Network in time for its twentieth anniversary.

In February 2017, the NAC Board of Directors and incoming President/CEO C. Grace Whiting celebrated Gail’s work to build a national and global caregiving movement at a celebration at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

In 2018, after more than twenty years of leadership in caregiving, Gail passed the torch to her colleague, C. Grace Whiting, to carry the organization forward in its next phase.
