Carolina Theatre of Durham company history timeline

1927

The Carolina Theatre opened with great fanfare on March 7, 1927, welcoming a large audience to see the silent film comedy, A Kiss in a Taxi.

1978

In March 1978, after economic conditions had forced the closure and a proposed demolition of the Carolina Theatre the year before, the City of Durham leased the venue to the Carolina Cinema Corporation with Doctor Monte Moses as president.

Like many historic theaters of its era, Carolina Theatre went into decline as audiences gravitated to new cinemas in the suburbs, and its doors closed on November 27, 1978, after a final showing of The Fist, starring Bruce Lee.

2017

Construction to restore and renovate the theater began in 2017.
