Key Responsibilities

Assist with managing and servicing large groups, special events, and promotional activities.

As part of the professional veterinary curriculum, colleges encourage off-campus educational experiences in practices outside of the teaching hospital. Practical experience in a well-run and contemporary practice can be a valuable component of your veterinary education, preparing you to deliver better care after graduation. Our program is dedicated to contributing to your practice-readiness and to help you hit the ground running after graduation.
Our program structure:
Our externships are flexible-they can range from two to eight weeks during the year, according to your college curriculum - but are typically two or three weeks in length. Your schedule will include days, evenings and weekends.
Our externship rotations are designed to allow students, under veterinary supervision, to practice the problem-solving, technical and communication skills that they have acquired during their clinical preparation. Externs are given the opportunity to work alongside our veterinary team and are encouraged to participate in all aspects of patient care. A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.
What you'll be doing:
Externs experience the typical caseload of a small animal practice. Under the supervision of your mentor doctor you will gather histories, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans, scrub in to surgery, assist in the management of medical cases, provide wellness care, develop your client communication skills, polish your technical skills and produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice.

Compensation

Job Description
Community of Veterans (CoV) is the first and largest online social network exclusively for paperwork-confirmed Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. CoV provides its more than 24,000 members with access to message boards, affinity groups, resources, and live chats with experts on a range of issues - especially those related to mental health. CoV provides veterans with a safe space to share what they're going through with others who “get it” because they've been there too. An informal peer-to-peer support system and means of connecting with resources and experts, CoV is an invaluable gathering space for veterans grappling with PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injuries, depression, and even thoughts of suicide.
The Online Community Intern will be responsible for supporting the IAVA Programs department to promote engagement within CoV through outreach and communications with members, posting content and resources, and scheduling live chats and other events. The Online Community Intern will report to the Senior Program Manager.
The Online Community Intern will:
Interact with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans online and off by conducting outreach to promote CoV sign-ups at IAVA events and interacting with veteran members in CoV
Learn about methods for digital outreach and engagement, through drafting social media announcements and blog posts, and through planning and executing online events, such as webinars and live chats

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Attend New Staff Orientation prior to starting the internship.
Provides direct service to members, as indicated by the service plan, while supervised by an appropriate, designated staff person. Consistent with the intern's level of experience and training, this potentially includes but is not limited to individual counseling/therapy, case management, teaching, assessment, assertive community treatment, job support, managing medications, treatment planning, crisis intervention, and group counseling/therapy. Completion of all assigned paperwork in a timely fashion, such as individual and group documentation, attendance reports, service plans and evaluations as assigned by the supervisor.
Provide accurate and timely information to the supervisor on all topics and issues important to the rehabilitation and well-being of Thresholds members.
Attend staff and team meetings as assigned by a supervisor.
Maintain a professional demeanor with members, colleagues, and collateral contacts consistent with agency ethics and code of conduct guidelines.

The 150-hour long internship will offer participants the opportunity to receive on-the-job training, professional development curriculum, and support identifying and transitioning into long-term employment. Centered around the SPY Community Garden, this internship opportunity will highlight food justice, community-building, and healing.
The first 3 months of the internship will take place at the SPY Community Garden on Venice Blvd, where interns will learn about gardening, urban farming, landscaping, cooking and more. The second 3 months of the internship will take place at a partner business of the intern's choosing, in industries like food service, landscaping, nurseries and more. Throughout the program, interns will receive one-on-one support sessions with the Intern Liaison, as well as group based professional development classes.
This is the ideal opportunity for someone who is interested in developing their workforce skills.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Support the SPY Garden Team in growing the SPY Garden (planting, watering, weeding, composting, harvesting, distributing).
Authentic participation in activities and discussions around garden-related topics, garden walks, and workshops.
Help plan and co-facilitate garden-related workshops for youth and community members.
Support management in tracking plant and volunteer data, as needed.
Attend SPY Garden team meetings.

The Ford Foundation Equity Initiative Internship Program Overview and Time Commitment
The FFEI Internship Program's mission is to offer opportunities in museum work to emerging professionals who identify with historically marginalized groups and to invite our interns to think outside the box and explore their careers in new ways.
Participants will engage in the program through various bi-weekly professional development workshops hosted on our Dearborn campus. It is mandatory for participants to attend, and applicants should work with their leadership to ensure proper attendance. Workshops tend to occur on Wednesdays throughout the program.
Attendance to our Intern Orientation is also mandatory. Our Winter 2026 orientation will occur on January 26, 2026.
