It wasn't until 1851 that pioneers created a permanent settlement.

A furnace ran for three years, beginning in September 1852, generating around 25 tons of pig iron from iron ore resources in the Iron Mountain District.

1897

In 1897, the Utah Legislature authorized the establishment of a teacher training school in southern Utah, choosing Cedar City as its location.

1923

Completion in 1923 of a branch line of the Union Pacific Railroad from Lund stimulated development of the community.

In 1923, the Union Pacific Railroad built a spur off the main line from Lund to Cedar City.

1930

In 1930, town residents constructed the Old Rock Church, located just east of the current city offices, from local materials and volunteered help.
