Champaign Country Club company history timeline

1904

In October 1904, members of the Champaign Golf Club met with other civic leaders to formulate a plan to start a country club.

1905

A year later, the formal opening on the new Clubhouse was held on July 4, 1905, with a putting contest, tennis games, clock golf, fireworks, and dancing.

In 1905 the Danville Country Club had replaced the Jacksonville Country Club, a founding member.

1916

Evans was the first to win the United States Open and the United States Amateur in the same year (1916). Also, he won the Western Amateur eight times.

1918

In April 1918 the Club purchased 75 additional acres of Emery property at 24th and State streets extending along State Street to 30th Street.

1922

The early record for this new course was held by Charles L. “Chink” Weems (later a mayor of Quincy) with a 73 in the spring of 1922.

1923

One of the first was Charles “Chick” Evans who in 1923 spent a weekend at QCC playing two 18-hole rounds with various Club members.

An additional purchase of 60 acres in 1923 allowed for the construction of the 18 hole course, under the guidance of Willie B. Still, Scotch professional.

1931

The Club joined the Chicago Golf Association in 1931 to hold in Quincy the first-ever Illinois State Amateur Championship, and the Club has been the site of the Illinois Women’s State Amateur Championship several times.

1933

The Illinois Women’s Golf Association was formed in 1933 and Champaign Country Club golfers have been active in the IWGA since its inception.

1970

In 1970-71 a lake was created in the southwest corner of the Club’s property, between Emery Creek and No.

1990

Fast forward to 1990, the Club President and Board of Directors proposed an plan to build a new Clubhouse with a plea stating “we have a long and distinguished tradition and the reputation of being a premier Club in our community and throughout the Midwest.
