City Garden Waldorf School company history timeline

2004

In need of additional resources to grow, the high school became an independent entity in 2004 and relocated to Belmont.

2005

In 2005 the School converted the first three floors at 703 Massachusetts Avenue into Preschool classrooms and created a play garden at the rear of the building.

The early childhood center grew quickly, attracting families from across Chicago who were drawn to Waldorf education. Its roots stretch back to 2005, with the opening of City Garden Early Childhood Center, a preschool and kindergarten in Pilsen, co-founded by veteran Waldorf teacher Jone Hellesoy and her business partner Victor Kroll.

2006

In 2006 a small group of preschool parents decided to start a new school.

In 2006, several parents of City Garden preschoolers decided to found an elementary school.

2009

Founded in 2009, Urban Prairie Waldorf School is a not-for-profit, independent pre-k through eighth-grade school located just west of downtown on the near west side of Chicago, situated between the Illinois Medical District, Little Italy, and Pilsen neighborhoods.

2011

Lauren has been working to change lives through education since she first began her teaching journey in 2011.

2013

She helped establish City Garden School in 2013 with a group of parents who also wanted Waldorf education for their grade school children.

In 2013-14, Urban Prairie signed a five-year lease for the former school building at Our Lady of Pompei Shrine at Lexington and Racine.

2019

Monica Everett began her journey at City Garden in 2019 as a Summer Camp teacher, where she spent many June days romping through Rockbridge State Park skipping rocks with our adventurous crew of children.

2021

Katy Shaffer began her work with City Garden School in December of 2021 stepping into the role of Interim Director.

She started her time with City Garden as a summer camp teacher in 2021.

In 2021, she joined City Garden as the Administrative Assistant.
