1812

Admitted to the union in 1812 as the 18th state, Louisiana commands a once strategically vital region where the waters of the great Mississippi-Missouri river system, draining the continental interior of North America, flow out into the warm, northward-curving crescent of the Gulf of Mexico.

1832

The City was officially incorporated as a municipality within the State of South Carolina on December 20, 1832.

1843

The city's French heritage runs deeper still, beginning with its founder, the Catholic missionary Père Antoine Désiré Mégret, who in 1843 named Abbeville for his hometown in France.

1844

He also found that on February 12, 1844, the pastor gave to his Louisiana town the name of the place where he was born.

Megret, but was not organized and sufficiently settled to become recognized as a town until 1850.

1854

The original Church (then named in honor of St Ann) burned in 1854 and St Mary Magdalen Catholic Church now stands at the same location.

1860

The fertile soil covering much of the terrain made Louisiana a rich agricultural area by 1860, with flourishing sugarcane and cotton plantations.

Officially adopted July 21, 1958.

2005

In 2005 Hurricane Katrina eroded an additional 73 square miles (189 square km) of the Louisiana coastland.

2008

In January of 2008, First Lady Laura Bush designated Abbeville as a Preserve America Community.

In 2008, Abbeville celebrated its 250th anniversary.
