1801

However in 1801, a terror campaign led by the janissaries troop established their own rule over the town: that was a period of anarchy and violence that brought to the slaughter of the Serbian knezes.

1804

Liberation of BelgradeThe rise of national consciousness led to the First Serbian Insurrection in 1804.

1807

1807 Led by Karađorđe, Serbs liberate Belgrade and make it the capital of Serbia.

1813

1813 The Turks occupy Belgrade; the uprising is crushed; Karađorđe flees Serbia.

1830

That time the conflict was resolved by a diplomatic agreement in 1830: the Turks would leave the countryside and live in only six forts.

1844

There are many museums and galleries, of which the oldest, the National Museum (Narodni Muzej), was founded in 1844.

1863

Belgrade is the site of numerous government offices and is also home to various cultural and educational institutions, including the University of Belgrade, founded in 1863.

1867

Finally in 1867 the Turks left Belgrade.

The Serbs were given control of the citadel in 1867, when Belgrade once more became the capital of Serbia.

1876

The Turkish commander hands over the keys to Belgrade Fortress to Prince Mihailo Obrenović. 1876 Serbian-Turkish war.

1878

1878 Formal independence of Serbia recognized at the Congress of Berlin.

1881

Quaw found this area pleasing, and in July 1881, he filed with Montana’s Gallatin County Courthouse an application for Belgrade, Montana, “a blind railroad siding,” to become a full-fledged town.

1913

1913 Second Balkan War waged and won by Serbia against Bulgaria.

1916

1916 Recovered Serbian soldiers join the allied army on the Salonica Front.

1918

1918 With the breakthrough on the Salonica Front, the Serbian army returns to Serbia.

1921

From 1921 Belgrade was the capital of the three successive Yugoslav states, including the rump Yugoslavia.

1930

From the turn of the century through the 1930’s, Belgrade continued to expand, gaining businesses, professionals and the trappings of an established community.

1934

The Serbs, Croats and Slovenes unite into one state and Belgrade becomes the capital of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians (later Yugoslavia). 1934 King Aleksandar visits Marseille in a bid to strength- en a defence union with France against Germany.

1941

1941 The 27th March protests erupt against joining the Axis (Germany-Italy-Japan). Following a coup d’etat, 17-year-old Crown Prince Petar assumes the throne.

1944

The city fell into Nazi hands and Belgrade's Jewish community were subject to mass shootings or were sent to extermination camps, perpetrating a barbaric genocide of over 750.000 Serbs, Jews and Gypsies.On 20th October 1944 Belgrade was liberated by Communist Yugoslav Partisans and the Red Army.

However, Belgrade was finally liberated on October 20, 1944 by the joint efforts of the Yugoslav Partisans and the Red Army.

1945

The Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia was proclaimed in Belgrade on November 29, 1945 by Josip Broz Tito, Yugoslavia’s fabled leader during the Cold War.

1945 The human cost of war is 1,700,000 deaths, chiefly among Serbs.

1961

1961 The first Conference of Non-Aligned Countries is held in Belgrade.

1980

1980 Josip Broz Tito dies.

1991

The Capital of SerbiaUnresolved issues of various origins such as ethnical, political and economic ones led to the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991, which marked the end of the longest period of peace in Balkan in the XX century.

1996

1996 Massive protests against Slobodan Milošević over electoral fraud at local elections.

1998

Belgrade was bombed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as a result of the Kosovo conflict of 1998–99.

1999

1999 Long-lasting aspirations of Kosovo Albanians to secede from Serbia escalate in violent conflicts between Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo.

2000

2000 Slobodan Milošević is ousted amid huge protests over electoral fraud.

2003

2003 Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is replaced by the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro.

2006

2006 The State Union of Serbia and Montenegro ceases to exist.

2007

2007 Negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo Albanians over the status of Kosovo are held.

2008

2008 With the support of the USA and some EU countries, Albanians from Kosovo and the Metohija province of Serbia declare their independence.
